Hi all
Just helped a work mate clear norton 360 and install avast and comodo 3 firewall
And yep after a boot scan 2 trojans that stupid norton missed.
When will people stop using norton??
Why is norton on so many new machines ??
Avast rocks when avast 5 ?
Keep up the good work
By the way ssupdater.com rates avast free 20% higher than avg8 free (something we all understood)
;D happy computing
cool jays
well these questions may never be answered…especially the first one…the answer for the second maybe is that norton is very famous at the AV market and their products are in every market that sells pc or softwares…so newbies on the computer world think that they can find it everywhere for a reason:that its very effective…thats false though…as norton is in every pc market of every country…i think this will never change…
why norton is in all machines? simply, they pay a lot of money to be installed in the brand new pc.
I bought my new HP portable pc with norton installed on it, I deleted after 2 days and put avast.
My 2.8GHZ IBM ThinkCentre ( That’s Canadian EH! ) came with Norton pre-installed and is embedded in the recovery partition so as soon as I watched the system start for the first time out of the box I watched in horror as I saw that Norton was being installed.
Even before I put the system on the Internet I un-installed Norton because the system’s performance was slower than my 2.4GHZ XP Home system.
I then used regedit to Find… all instances of Norton and removed the plethora of registry entries left over.
I then used regedit to Find… all instances of Symantec and removed the plethora of registry entries left over.
I used Search to locate any remnants of Norton or Symantec files or Folders and deleted them as well.
Rinse. Lather. Repeat as necessary.
I then installed Avast! as it was working well on the XP Home system.
There’s nothing to add!!! Avast beats as an AV!!! Norton can buy AVAST but not beat it…
Oh please god no…do NOT allow Norton to buy avast!
They will “re-design” it.
They will shelf it.
They will turn it into the horrible, bloated cow program that they just love to create.
If anyone from avast! reads this…I beg you…please…if Norton calls…don’t answer the phone.
Remember, it is the same with drugs…just say…NO .
Fight the Bloated Cow syndrome…use avast!
my computer came the same way with Norton preinstalled i use it for a while and then i got Norton 360 but it missed some virus on my system so then i went to CA it found the virus and got things going again but a few weeks ago i saw on PC magazine that avast was one of the top dogs so here i am.avast and i got off to a ruff start because mainly i didn’t understand the menus in it i do think avast could work on that a little but now over all i am satisfied with it. i am still using the Norton fire wall that is built into windows xp sp3 and it has a Norton update built into xp to keep the fire wall updated. you can’t uninstall the Norton update in the control panel because it is built into xp and it want let you uninstall it that kinda sucks.
Strange I uninstalled it on Vista last year, was not easy, but there is the Norton Removal Tool. It it not embedded in XP but often you have it preinstalled on brand new computers. :
do run the norton av removal tool
remnants of symantec can cause hard to diagnose problems
does your firewallcontain a block list that must be maintained/ updated
if not why clutter your system with an updater?
It’s on my HP restore partition also… any time I have to restore - fortunately very few ones - I receive it as a gift again…
I think it’s due to their very aggressive marketing and agreements…
