I have Avast Internet Security installed, and use Google Chrome as my browser with the Avast Online Security extension loaded and active in Chrome.
Every so often, when I start Google Chrome, The Avast online security extension pops up a Banner asking me do I want to install Avast free antivirus to improve the security on my computers, and give me the option to download/install Avast free antivirus.
Questions:
Doesn’t the Avast extension recognise that I have Avast Internet Security installed?
Do I need to have the Avast Online Security in Chrome when using Avast Internet Security?

I don’t think Avast recognizes the AOS plugin since it can be downloaded as standalone from the Google Web store. That being said, I’d recommending removing and reinstalling the AOS plugin since as far as I know it shouldn’t pop up with a banner unless it finds an infected website.

The Avast Online Security is optional and can be disabled. All the protection comes from the Web Shield. However, the AOS add on gives website reputations in colors and has Ad tracking/web analytic blocking features. There are alternatives to the add-on such as WOT and Do not track me.

1: It should. No such nag-screens here with AIS isntalled… You might want to try a clean install or repair of either or both the extension and/or the internet security app.
2: No, you do not ‘need’ it. It offers additional privacy and site reputation functions over the web shield in Internet Security which focusses mainly/solely on blocking viruses. The browser plugin is optional, it’s function seems somewhat comparable to the privacy functions an extension like Adblock Plus offers.
