Hi CharleyO.
I guess it was a bit silly loading Chrome to a front line computer just to trial it. I have less important computers I can use. Why I wanted to get to know it is because people stipulate what they want, so best to know a bit about it - the neighbours kids have got it, so their kids have to have it. Good to know the pros and cons, so can pass on the best practice when its added to someone’s wishlist. I get this quite often. Same reason why most get Adobe Reader, Flash player, Shockwave - for the kids games mainly, but also PDF and video for students / adults. Not that big on Adobe myself, but the Adobe set is a good compromise. These are things they stipulate, that they have got to know amongst themselves. I have a feeling Chrome may fall into this category. But I already know its not for me. I can see the title of this thread is going to quickly become a misnomer.
Opera is something that I have heard nothing but good about for a couple of years now. I nearly ran the browser once, but became too pressed for time (as always).
For a few months I have been getting by with IE7 then IE8 and running Google search as my home page, which has worked out okay. I use Favorites in my Start Menu heavily and hit IE icon when I want Google search box. Mainly I use IE with No Add-Ons so just basic IE engine runing under the browser. Problem is over the last few months, I have been successively becoming more adventurous with my browsing - real learning curve, as I was more a hardware / network specialist (just hand me a screwdriver) - and now I think I need as much to cover myself software-wise, as think of my clients needs. Avast forum has been something of a godsend in this learning curve. For the time being I am going to run with Firefox, which is a browser I know a bit about. I have just loaded it to this computer, which is an exact duplicate of the profile below but with 256 Rambus. We’ll see how this goes. Its only the start point of a next phase.
Hi YoKenny.
Yes WOT is added on to my Firefox browser and I’m already sold on it. Next I will be looking at NoScript, which I know nothing about but I’m sure there is lots of good info in the forum to get me started. Also, I first came across those scammers about a year ago when they must have bought high-visibility advertising with Google and were trading through name Avast.com I think (using the capital A). I was mortified once I realised I had been taken in as I didn’t pick it at first, even though I had been using avast for a couple of years. I had needed to download for a client - and then shock, horror, and then I noticed the capital A. So I just went down the page until I found the product I know. They must have slipped out of sight for a while, perhaps. I wondered if that was them today. And thanks for the tip because I would never have noticed that they were gone again. I did do quick skim through their grovel though, and I will know them straight off next time. And I have got WOT now, so like you say, I will know better who are the scammers.
Edit - when I first saw the scammers about a year ago, I though Alwil had done a make-over. So glad they didn’t, and I can still look through their site and actually see real people who initiated, develop, and market the brand. I’ll be writing avast all lower case from now on so I dont forget.
