Google not working properly / Windows Defender won't update

I am using Windows Vista. My HiJack This results are below.

Google keeps opening search results in new windows (despite me changing the settings to the contrary). Also, I keep being redirected to advertising sites, or different search sites (such as ask jeeves) or shopping sites etc.

I have avast! Pro Antivirus 5 installed, SpyBot S&D, Malware Bytes and obviously Windows Defender. None of these have picked up or repaired the problem.

Also, whilst trying to fix this problem, I have encountered problems updating. Windows Defender comes up with an error message when trying to update (“Error found: Code 0x80072efd”) and SpyBot S&D also comes up with an error message when trying to update (“Error retrieving update info file!”). When I try to update directly from their respective websites, I cannot access their sites. I just get an error message. I am using Google Chrome but the same hing happens with Internet Explorer.

Please help. Any and all advice welcome.
