Green Virus/Trojan icon on the taskbar

Hello, hope someone can help me. I was online last tuesday when I hoticed a green icon with two eyes and a red nose on the taskbar. My computer started slowing down and soon I could not open any programs, like my Avast Home edition. Eventually the start menu started going blank. I shut down. I had the latest update from Avast that morning and I also have a firewall. Anyone got any ideas what virus I have got and how I can get rid of it. I desperately need to use my computer but dare not restart it until I know what to do. Thanks a lot for any help you can give me. I am running Windows ME on an 800mhz pentium with 176 of RAM.

Hi, pyramide.
I have no idea what that is (must be spyware I guess). You could try downloading (on another PC) the MWAV & CureIt! utilities and scan your computer with them. Also, try some anti-spyware’s.

Thank you Spyros. I am actually frightened to restart my computer in case I lose files etc. I beleive I can do this in safe mode without any risk. Do you know if this is right? Also, how did this thing get past my Avast?

That's what I would do too. (Maybe even start the MWAV & CureIt! from a flash drive).

We have to see what it is first, then we can talk back about this.

Don’t connect your PC to the internet, untill everything is set back to normal.

Hi ! It seems like spyware to me,but it’s my opinion only. Actualy i had something like that a few weeks ago, and removed it with Ad-Aware :wink:

Well if that thing is spyware, it can pass trought Avast because avast can’t detect spyware. Actualy it detects some spyware and adware, but a small number :wink:

I do not remember the name of that thing, but you will be able to uninstall it easy. It brings its own uninstaller(under add/remove Software)

Thank you XMAS & Raman. I actually have SpyBot installed and imunized so it got through that also. I will start up in safe mode and see what I find. Hope I can run some programs from my CD Rom drive. Thanks anyway

If you haven’t already got this software, download, install, update and run it.

    Ignore any 023 reference to avast processes, this is a hiccup in the HJT 1.99.1 (especially missing file entry for avast), if you need any help with any of the analysis let us know.
