grumbles... avast!updates.

Well first off, i just want to say avast is a awesome antivirus program and i’ll give that part a 5/5

But…

the updating is really starting to drive me up a wall. everyday then sometimes 2 times a day ect… See, i was using a program and the “update” box poped up (yea, i won’t let it auto update), and crashed my program, made me lose my work… this will be the 5th time its crashed my stuff…

I’m just about ready to uninstall this program and get something else… I’ve seen people unable to uninstall avast… I just wounder why there is no “uninstaller” with the program… Maybe they should add one next time.

updating 2 times a day, is really starting to pester me…

Thanks for your time,
Jeffurry

The program does come with an uninstaller. Are you looking in the add/remove programs list? What OS are you running?

Also have you had any other AV software on the said computer? If so, which one?

Additionally, is it just the one program? or is it more that this happens with?

What are your system specs?

Windows XP (MCE)
SP3
1gig ram

It seems to crash anything. Firefox/chrome/IE/any other program.

I did find the “uninstaller”… It was in the add/remove programs (but i don’t recall seeing it there last time)

I’ve got Spybot Search & Destroy installed (does not affect avast and avast does not affect it). I have AVG on standby if i can’t figure this out…

If you have avg imstalled at the same time, this will lead to conflicts and avast will not be able to run properly. This is likely to be the reason that you have these crashes.

You need to choose one AV and stick to it.

AVG is not installed
its just on standby if i can’t figure this out.

Ok then. What was your previous AV? How did you uninstall it?

(edit) avast has been on this computer for months now. only one i have used)
Add/remove programs

I’ve just uninstalled Avast. Might do a fresh install, i noticed something tho after the uninstall:
in Task Manager it shows:
ashServ.exe
ashWeSv.exe

still showing those two running, but avast is uninstalled… That’s not right o_O#

Ok you could try a complete re-install of avast!, just work through from where you are…

For a re-installation of avast!:

VERY IMPORTANT - Do not uninstall avast! yet, follow the instructions

  1. Download the most recent version of avast!
Make sure to download the Full setup file, NOT the ‘universal installation file’
  2. Download the avast! Un-install Utility
  3. Disconnect from the net
  4. Uninstall avast! through ‘add/remove programs’
  5. Reboot into safe mode and run the avast! un-install utility
  6. Reboot
  7. Install the the latest version of avast!
  8. Re-connect to the net.

Sorry too late Scott. It’s been nice using Avast! for the past 6 months, but after it started to crash my stuff, i’m just gonna use somethin else…

Have Fun

Well that is reasonable, it is your choice after all.

Personally I would want to get to the bottom of the problem, considering you were using it without problem for 6 months.

A clean reinstall would have been a good start; followed by reporting the information given in the Crashes/BSODs (assuming they still occur) and then we can try to get to the bottom of the problem.

Noble sentiments, but from my PoV somewhat at variance with the reality. Sorry if this seems like blatant hijacking of a thread, but I’ve tried creating two of my own, to no avail, and since you profess to be in a receptive frame of mind, I want to try and capitalize.

I chipped into a live thread, in which someone was asking if anyone else was seeing the same problem as he was, because I was. I did a bit more work and identified a reproducible route to produce a BSOD which unambigously identified Avast! as the culprit and identified the precise nature of its misdemeanour. I reported this, in that thread, and sent 4 minidumps via email. I provided a reference to the thread in the email, and a reference to the email in the thread, as requested. I got no feedback.

After a reasonable length of time, I started a new thread, specific to my own experience, but with a reference to the first thread. That also got no reply.

After another reasonable length of time, I sent a follow-up email to the same address I used to send the minidumps. That also got no feedback.

Then I chipped into another two threads where people were reporting problems with Avast at start-up. I figured my own findings might be relevant so I provided links to both the relevant threads. I got one reply from Yokenny asking what my system specs were. I provided the information. Since then, no feedback.

I’m not asking for a blow-by-blow account of progress in trying “to get to the bottom of the problem”, but acknowledgement of receipt would have been a polite minimum, and a simple statement of “we can/cannot reproduce the problem” would have been a very close second. Lack of any feedback whatsoever, despite repeated diplomatic nudges, is just rude.

Sadly, I know from a cursory trawl of the forums, that I am not alone in the BSOD minidump provision experience lottery.
