GUI does not show

The splash screen appears, runs the memory test, and disappears without ever showing the main window
It is in the taskbar at the bottom but it will not show [options close and move] (close closes it, move is useless unless I can see the window)

What OS do you use? Was another AV installed prior to Avast, and was it uninstalled? Is any other security software installed?
Depending on the answers to those questions you could try a repair. Go to add/remove programs in the control panel, select Avast, select “change”, then “repair”.

What happens if you try to run the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashSimpl.exe directly ?

Does it exist in that location, if not the repair should resolve that as suggested by Tarq57.

I am running Windows XP Professional SP3 (problem was present before update)
No other AV installed
No other security

ashSimpl.exe creates the “Avast! Simple User Interface” on the taskbar but does not show a screen

It shouldn’t be creating an icon on the taskbar, the avast ’ a ’ icon should already be there ?

Try C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashSimp2.exe, that is the skinless version of the simple user interface.

Chose move and use the arrows to center the window in the screen, will it help?
If you run
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashSimp2.exe
will it work?

Do you mean that you’re not seeing the icon on system tray?

If so…

  1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
    or
  2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
    or
  3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
    or
  4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?
