GUI error crashes resident protection

In the past month or so, I have been getting the following error when I start up my computer:

“An unexpected GUI error has occurred, Avast! resident protection must be shut down”.

This crashes the system tray program, and I have no idea how to get it back.
I have two questions about this:

  1. What exe do I run to turn my resident protection back on?
  2. How do I prevent the GUI error from occurring?

hi Black_Dawn,

Welcome to the forum.
We need more than just the problem in order to help out.

1.What is your operating System ie Windows XP, Vista etc.
2. Do you have other security programs installed on your computer? ie Norton, Mcafee etc
3. Where there any of these programs installed before on your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

re: Confused
Thanks for the quick response.

  1. I’m on XP Pro with an AMD 3200+ processor, 1536mb of RAM.
  2. No, I do not currently have other security software installed.
  3. Yeah, I’ve had “Virus Shield” and AVG on this machine before Avast.

Odd note: The program worked fine while still in the Demonstration period. it is only after I registered that it started acting this way.

re: Tech
I tried repairing it, and I had already uninstalled+reinstalled twice before posting this. No dice.

Can I just run one of the EXEs in the program files folder to get the resident protection back?

Try the AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

Whilst you may have been using avast for a while, if there were any remnants of AVG left behind they could conflict, but this could present itself at any time as these conflicts don’t always happen right away.
