I had 4.7 on my Windows XP SP2 desktop and it was working OK, upgraded to 4.8 and nothing but trouble after a few days.
My computer was locking up, memory usage in task manager was excessive. I tried running Avast 4.8 with no Firewall and still had the problems.
Once I removed it all my problems went away. It is a good antivirus, is there anyway to install the antivirus only?
Will 4.7 still work and receive updates?
Well 4.8 is an anti-virus only. You can continue to get updates with 4.7, but you would have to set the program updates to manual to avoid the update. Personally I feel that is a backward step which doesn’t resolve any problems.
You could try the current beta release which has addressed many of the problems mentioned in the forums.
There are instructions and a link for the file which converts to the beta and you can update, directly from 4.7 through to the 4.8 beta build 4.8.1178. See http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34612.0.
I thought the 4.8 came with rootkit detection and antispyware?
I tried turning off resident protection modules I did not need and it made no difference in performance.
Yes it has… but why do you think that your problems (locking up, memory usage, etc.) are related to avast?
Which other security program do you use?
Which is your firewall?
Yes.
They are incorporated into the AV the same as a number of other anti-virus applications. Which of the resident providers did you turn off ?
Have you decided to try the beta and se if there is any difference ?
Trying avast again with fresh install.
I found that ADOBEUPDATE.EXE was freezing up my computer after upgrading to Adobe Reader 8-
It was causing 100%CPU for others info in case they are having problems with memory. I could not stop it in Task Manager, had to go into MSCONFIG and disable it and restart.
Seems to be working OK now.
