al, why don’t you use a partition for Ubuntu and have a dual boot system?
Tomorrow will be released a new Ubuntu version. By the way, I suggest Kubuntu 8)
If your BIOS supports booting from an external drive then that is an option, however I suggest setting up a dual boot system if you know how
Can’t wait for the new version tomorrow ;D
I would suggest completely opposite. If you are first time Linux user, what you have mentioned up there is a lot better option for you. I am also using Linux (PCLinuxOS) installed on my external, USB Hard Drive. Whenever I want to boot into Linux, I just hook it up and boot from it. BTW, my BIOS allows me to set my external HD as primary boot device whenever it’s present, meaning if it’s not turned on, computer will normally boot from my internal HD. As soon as I connect my USB HD, BIOS recognizes it and my PC boots up from USB HD. Easy as 1, 2, 3.
Why I suggested you use external drive rather than having Ubuntu installed on the same HD where your primary OS is installed (Windows), but on a separate partition of course… because you can have a lot of headaches later if you decide to uninstall Ubuntu. It is not just uninstalling Ubuntu, but repartitioning your HD because Linux uses completely different file system than Windows. This process, if it’s not done the way it should be, sometimes can even mess up your MBR (Master Boot Record), and you won’t be able to recover it with anything. There are a lot of threads all over the internet about these issues where people are complaining about how it left their HDs completely unusable, and mostly first time Linux users are affected.
These are just few hits on Google and trust me there are millions out there:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=vzy&q=mbr+problems+after+uninstalling+linux&btnG=Search
When you MBR is messed up, there are some tools to fix it, even Windows installation CD offers a command to do that (FixMBR) ( http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/bootcons_fixmbr.mspx?mfr=true ), but sometimes nothing will help. Since you are first time user I would strongly suggest you go with USB HD option.
Please, take this as a friendly advice, not something that looks like scaring the hell out of you.
Cheers!
