Have to disable Avast to download

I’ve been using Avast free for just under 1 year. Settings include Hardened mode set to aggressive, Sensitivity for both File and Web shields, set to normal. Enabled, reputation services and Deepscreen. Scan for PUP’s. Operating system, XP, Firewall, Online Armor Free (HIPS features turned OFF)
All worked well until a couple of months ago. Now, almost everything I download fails with Avast activated. Doesn’t matter which browser, Firefox, Opera, Slimjet, and previously Chrome, is used.
Various attempts at a solutions: unchecking hardened mode, deepscreen, reputation services,PUP detector…no joy.
Disabling Avast for 10 minutes has become the norm for new versions of Ccleaner, Flash Player, Geek or Revo Uninstallers, Malwarebytes, etc.
Next solution, since my initial registration expires in 10 days, is to do a complete uninstall (Avastclear) and start fresh. If there are any other suggestions please advise? Cheers!

Does avast give any messages? .....if so what do they say?

Have you tried avast repair, from ad/remove programs ?

Yes, have tried repair.
No, have not received any messages. They would be helpful. (Silent/Gaming mode is not checked)
Nothing posted to chest that is relevant.

I would perform the clean installation.
It wouldn’t be the first time a update messed something up.
