Having a problem with Avast.

Well, I recently tried to update the program, that went all fine and good…until I restarted my computer. Turns out doing that, or so I think, caused my computer to not want to boot in anything but safe mode. Highly annoying situation I found myself in. Big deal, did a system restore and all was well again. Turns out, it wasn’t quite all well. Avast quit working. I had to redownload it, and I actually went for the trial version they offered, because why not? However, after installing that I took a look in my virus chest, but it was empty. It had several things in there and they are all gone without a trace. This does not bode well. Though I should mention they were missing BEFORE I upgraded to the trial, I just assumed installing the trial to fix the other problems would solve this one, but it didn’t. Tell me, did all these viruses get set free to wreak havoc upon my system or am I just really paranoid? Is the virus chest bugged? And just what does “Refresh All Files” in the virus chest do? I tried that, but it didn’t bring back what was once there. I am, as I said, quite paranoid.

Edit: Oh! Also, installed the trial over the free version did not fix the issue right off. I had to go into Add/Remove programs and repair it from there. >.>

do u mean u initially had malware locked in the chest?

well the refresh all button just refreshes the contents in the chest…doesnt delete all or restore anything the viruses will still be there in the chest…can u do a boot-time scan in avast!

cozz i am not sure of whether the viruses get deleted from the chest after uninstallation or not…they most probably get deleted when uninstallation.

Yeah, there were a couple of things in there. I happened to remember exactly where one of them in particular came from, scanned that area again and turned up nothing. Also, what exactly does the boot-time scan do?

It scan the pc upon restart before even windows starts so malware doesnt have a chance to activate on the computer.

I see. So I assume this would take awhile to complete?

yes depends on the contents u select to scan

normally i select in the interface to scan is

all drives

auto start programs [all users]

Go to the avast interface.

select scan computer.

select boot time scan.

select the contents to scan [all drives] [auto start programs]

click schdule now

reboot

it shoud scan upon reboot.
If nothing is found u are clean.

The System Restore is also part of the problem. You never know exactly what is brought up after you go back to some restore point.

About the chest, avast has not “released” its contents. Whether the restore point put them back or not, we have no way to know. It also depends on where the original files where located (so SR would include a back up or not).

When you uninstall avast, the chest is lost and there is no way to recover those files. Your only potential concern, from the info you provided, is if the original problematic files were brought back from the restore point you activated.
