Problem is as title but may be through age or stupidity, I cannot find how.
I am wondering if somehow Avast could be making me fail with my Chrome browser, newly reinstalled after removing a problem search engine.
Help please.

Why is it you exactly trying to do?
What version of avast?
Why are you trying to exclude the website from being scanned?
Is it not opening?
Is it giving problems?
You can add a URL as an exclusion in “Antivirus” and it should then be excluded from all shields.
GUI->Settings->Antivirus->Exclusions (see screenshot)
You have indicated you are using 2014 free antivirus. As far as I know the GUI hasn’t changed through any of the releases of 2014. The current release is 2014.9.0.2011.
Edit: excluding a website URL carries some risk in my view. It may be clean now, but you can’t guarantee it will remain so, and the exclusion above applies to all shields including the file shield.
It may suffice to have the exclusion apply to the Web shield only.
GUI->Settings->Active Protection=->Web shield (click on the cog in the web shield to open settings)
then Exclusions=->URLs to exclude.
