I’m currently fixing a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo L7320 (1.7GHz Celeron M, 512MB RAM, XP Home SP2, 40GB HDD), which had a bad virus on it (so bad it nearly infected my main Win 7 PC while I was backing up data. Luckily trusty ol’ Avast came to my rescue). I did a repair install of XP Home, but IE wouldn’t load, and Chrome became unresponsive, so there were still some traces of viruses on the machine I think. I downloaded the latest Avast installation file to disk and installed it on the Amilo. Fine, no problems. I go to update the definition files. It stops at the first stage, Initialising, and does not move even after 10 minutes. The same happens when I try and update the program.
I’ve ruled out the following:
My network - I’ve just done the exact same thing on another XP and a 7 machine, no issues
Internet connection on the Amilo - it validated Windows successfully and connects to my network fine.
I am currently running a full scan in Safe Mode to isolate any issues. I would update Avast in safe mode, but the wi-fi is controlled from some Fujitsu connection manager, which won’t work in safe mode, and I can’t change it to run through Windows while in safe mode. I will try an update in Safe Mode with Networking later on. If the current scan comes back clean, I will proceed with running Windows Update and updating the system to SP3, to see if that makes a difference.
On a smaller note, I’d just like to say I’ve been using Avast for 4 years and would have no working systems without it, it is one of my must haves on every system in our house, and I recommend it to all my friends who… don’t think anti-viruses are necessary :l)
I have downloaded it and intend to run it after the virus scan has completed.
There’s 10 infected files already, and I’m only 40% through. This is on an October definition file.
I’m wondering whether clearing the infected files will enable it to update. So will try to update it through the web after the files are gone.
If I understand correctly, you have downloaded Avast 5.0.677 (Free version?) to your XP SP2 with only 512MB RAM and having difficulty updating your virus definitions and have malware.
Several problems:
You most likely need more RAM. Avast 5.0 “recommends” 1.0 GB RAM.
The malware could be preventing you from upgrading your definitions or your machine from working properly. Check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
· Download freehttp://www.malwarebytes.org/ (the blue button) for an on-demand scanner.
· Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
· After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
· Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
· Once the program has loaded, select “Perform FULL Scan”, then click Scan.
· The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
· When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
· Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
· The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
· Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply. Reboot.
Please check the following to check the settings:
Open Avast GUI > Settings > Updates >
A. Engine and Virus Definitions:
Automatic Update (default)
For “Manual” or “Ask When Update Available ” > Settings > Status Bar > Uncheck the last box
B. Update Parameters: all boxes unchecked (default)
If you use DSL, you may want to set #2 above to “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet.”
If you use dial-up, you will want to use #2 above to “I only connect to the Internet using dial-up modem.”
C. Proxy Settings: Auto Detect using IE Settings (default)
Some people have found that using “Direct connection / No Proxy” have worked for them.
Use “Specify Proxy Server” if you use a proxy and complete the information below it for the proxy server > click “OK.”
Now try to update your definitions and let me now if this helps. Also, if MBAM did find malware and quarantined it, let me know how your machine is running after the disinfection. Thank you.
Once your malware is removed and virus definitions are up to date, you will need to update your SP2 to SP3 as this presents a huge security hole.
I using an old tower\system…my usual setup has a smoked up power supply and is being repaired, I dragged this out of the attic…as its only temporary I running it ‘as is’.
Hello,
I am having the same problems described here. I am running XP, SP2 (because my machine has issues with SP3) and I have tried the settings suggested with no luck. I have also tried downloading the latest software from CNET, but it does not install either.
Here is a copy of the repair log which prompted me to try the full install.

Thanks for the comments.
I have an older Gateway tower and every time I try to load SP3, the system crashes. I have always managed to get SP2 reloaded and stabilize the system.
It would appear I must get another software that will work with this system.
Thanks anyway.
