Heavily infected machine cleaning kindda turned wrong....

HI!!

A friend, who is a total beginner with computers asked me to look at their machine because they were having issues… AVAST! found traces of Casino-B [dialer], Zlob-AGV [trj], Renos-CS[adw], Antivirgear [tool].

I then run Combofix.exe, SmitfraudFix.exe, adaware, Spybot and Spyware Terminator

Smithfraud could not delete registry files. I an now left with a completely blank desktop image, which will not change no matter what I do… Here’s a hijackthis log I just run. Any help to get things back to normal would be greately appreciated!!! Thanks!!

Hi cin123456789

Try one of the three methods proposed here to get the desktop back:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/184197

http://www.hijackthis.de/logfiles/7fceff8825345bd0c3f31a397c0a7a42.html is where you can find the hjt logfile for three consequent days.

This looks nasty: O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZRxdm678YYCA
Fix this after you have disabled TeaTimer, known to interfere this cleansing routine;
START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new hijack log from normal NOT safe mode,

polonus

Without the original combofix log(not one from the 2nd or 3rd etc run), it’s difficult to see what was removed in respect to the problem.

Smitfraud does carry a warning, “running this on an uninfected machine will remove the desktop.” Or similar wording.

Try what polonus suggested to get the desktop back. The original logs would also be useful in addition to what else he asked.

Hi cin123456789,

Next to what I proposed in my previous posting, and considering what “oldman” remarked,
you could also try and run the following tool considering one of the original infections found:
