Hi everyone! I’ve been browsing this forum for quite a time as a guest. Now, I’m joining as a member.
I’ve been using Avast free for a year till this August. Uninstall Avast in favor of trying Microsoft Security Essentials in September (been hearing a lot of good news about it). Indeed it’s quite good, however it’s not as light on processor and memory as everyone say it is (My spec is Win 7 x64, Core i7 720QM (1.6GHz), 4GB DDR3). It’s because I’m using Avast that I’m already used to of how light Avast is on my computer. So, no matter how great or light MSE is, still I feel as if it’s suffocating my computer. MSE only last for about 44 days, I uninstall it and installing Avast back in October
Now, here I am joining your forum and introducing myself to you Well, I hope you guys can help me when I’m in need for help and I can help anyone here when I can…
You have found what others have also said, MSE isn’t a light as it says, certainly not in comparison with avast, which also does more, strange isn’t it ;D
Your system is no slouch with a good CPU, whilst it might have a low CPU clock GHz, you do have 4 cores and good fast ram, so I shudder to think what MSE might be like on an older system.
Thanks YoKenny
Basically Win 7 x64 is an improvement of Vista x64. There’s a lot of nice thing in 7 if you’re migrating from XP. However, there’s one big problem with 7 and Vista. It’s concerning to audiodg.exe which handling sound input and output in your system. It’s sometimes or all the times eating your processor process between 5%-30% when you’re creating audio process (song listening, ripping, DVD watching, Windows sounds, etc) when it’s not suppose to (normal song listening 0-1%, ripping 1-3%, DVD watching 1-2%). I’ve browse around many forums, it seems the problem relating with buggy sound driver, Creative software, sound settings, etc. However, no matter I clean uninstall and installing the latest update of my sound driver, fixing my sound settings the problem still exist sometimes ??? Well, I’ve never had this kind of trouble with my previous notebook with XP in it. It seems there’s a lot of Vista and 7 user experiencing the same problem like me (based on what I see in the forums)
Hi Altarir IE8 is a good browser (apart from ActiveX and slow problem). I haven’t tried IE9 but it looks promising (apart from ActiveX problem). Opera is my default browser (really fast in a slow network with Opera Turbo off). Chrome is my secondary browser (a bit slower than Opera and the latest stable/7.0.517.44 is quite buggy i.e: Showing me white blank page in the new tab when I open the new tab from link. Requiring me to either refresh the new tab or clicking the address bar and pressing enter). I like Firefox but I’m not using it right now as it become more and more buggy in it’s every update (I’ve tried 3.6.12 and the same bug still exist, and it’s still slow)
Hi, DavidR Yes, MSE is light on my system, however Avast is a lot lighter on my system as if it’s weren’t there Well, at least until you do full scan of course. Avast full scan with PUP checked eat 8%-15% CPU at most (it’s usually 12% or 13%) and the first full scan (after installing) took between 12 to 18% of my CPU, while MSE full scan eat 12%-22% of my CPU. MSE using about 6-7% more RAM than Avast. In short it’s suffocating my computer when I have other better alternative. Oh, I remember that I’ve installed Avira the first time after uninstalling McAffee (preinstalled by vendor). Avira only last for two days for it took almost the same size of CPU and RAM as McAffee does. And I don’t like the Luke Filewalker thing (Sure many people love Star Wars but to put the name in professional antivirus product?) :-X
and the search option is above next at the start button
XP is annoying for me. It is so uncomfortable (for me)...
cause maybe the reason that your xp is 32 bit, and yes you need to have a layered protection coz as this Generation-7 64-bit software is on board and some 32-bit os recognize 64-bit software as virus ;D ;D
Yes, I always doing clean uninstall and clean install every application that I have in my computer. Especially, when it comes to things like antivirus, firewall, drivers, codecs. Installing new application on top of the old one tends to give you unnecessary problems.
