Hi, just have some real quick questions and was hoping someone could help me out. I use Avast free and it is up to date.
Yesterday my avast said my computer required a restart. However it said everything was up to date and it didn’t detect anything. No notifications happened, just said required a restart. I even scanned with Hitmanpro and Malwarebytes. Both found nothing and so I am just wondering what avast did.
Is it possible to disable full screen optimizations within the avast UI? Meaning when I right click the UI icon on my desktop, go to properties and check the box that says disable full screen optimizations. It doesn’t let me. Once I hit apply, it blinks for a fraction of a second and then doesn’t save the apply. I think it used to let me, but I guess a recent update made it say no?
Does avast hate Kaspersky Tdsskiller? In the past it has made it so the program does not run and I have to add it as an exception. It hasn’t required me to do this in a few years, but since yesterday it started doing it again. It isn’t a big deal, just a little annoying.
If you’re online, Avast updates it’s virus protection about every 6 min.
How many bad places do you visit that you need to scan with several programs that often?
I hardly ever run a scan.
I don’t honestly. I’ve just always been recommended by people who work in IT over the years to use second opinion scanners and scan every 2 weeks - a month. I guess that isn’t true? heh, I am not using avast to scan if that is what you thought.
@ Pondus: I gotcha, I guess I’ve just never actually looked at avast when there was a minor bug fix or anything like that. I just happened to be turning silent mode off cause I was done playing a game.
As far as the other 2 answers.
When you say don’t use avast. You mean you don’t or I shouldn’t? I am still hoping someone knows if I can do this.
and while I understand what you are saying about Tdsskiller, but I am unsure as to why avast doesn’t like to let it run and I have to add an exception.
When you say don't use avast. You mean you don't
Correct

Tdsskiller has a limited detection range, mostly rootkits, it is a tool meant to be used when you have a problem.
Avast has built in rootkit scanner (gmer) that run 8min after computer startup
If you want a extra scanner i can recomend Malwarebytes free … or a online scanner (no install just a small driver) like Trend Micro housecall
You don’t have to run a scan with Avast for it to scan your files and your internet access. It happens just by you using the product.
I personally haven’t had Malwarebytes “catch” anything in several years. Avast doesn’t only stop virus, trojans, worms and rootkits.
It also scans and alerts for malware.

Malwarebytes is just a program name
Malware is not a type of bug but short for “Malicious software” = Evrything that can harm your computer
Sorry, just one last thing. Is there anyone who can shed some light on whether or not I can tick the box “Disable fullscreen optimizations” in the avast properties?
https://imgur.com/0xK7RRt Here is a pic of what I am referring too. It will not save the option whenever I try to hit apply sadly. In fact, I can’t change anything here.
In windows 10. Fullscreen Optimizations has been known to cause tons of issues with gaming performance since (I think) 1709. You used to be able to turn it off globally in various ways, but since 1809, it seems to be that you can’t disable it on a global scale in the system anymore. (Some say you can, others say you can’t, it is it or miss).
Many places I have read said that disabling it through the properties section (in the screenshot I posted) does work however, the annoying part is you need to disable it for each program 1 by 1. The problem however is a lot of people also say it isn’t just disabling it in games. So long as something running in the back round is being effecting by fullscreen optimizations (for example: Nvidia Control Panel, Discord, Cortana, even something simple like Notepad etc…) , you need to disable it because they too can effect whatever you are doing because of fullscreen optimizations trying to do… Well whatever it is that it does to whatever program it is trying to optimize. Some have also said it does not matter if the program is actually open on the desktop, as long as it runs in the backround, fullscreen optimization is trying to do… Again, whatever it is that it does. I assume that Avast is one of these programs because it has the option, it just doesn’t let you.
Take what I say with a grain of salt here of course as I am, like many, just some random person on the internet. I’ve just read a ton into this issue over the past couple of weeks.
I never said anything about notifications. Which the more I read what do not disturb mode does, all I see is about turning notifications off. Notifications have nothing to do with Fullscreen Optimizations.
I understand what the 4th box says about fullscreen apps. However that doesn’t fix the problem either. It isn’t apps being run in full screen that is the problem. It’s any app on windows 10 that isn’t running exclusively in full screen (which is just about everything, almost everything runs in a Borderless Windowed type of full screen) that is causing the Fullscreen Optimization trouble.
For example: With VLC, if you full screen it, it isn’t exclusively full screened, it is being run in border-less windowed mode, which causes Fullscreen Optimizations to try and do whatever it wants and can cause problems.
I hope I am not coming off as rude, as that is not my intention.
The interface doesn’t have to be open. As long as the program is running in the background, Fullscreen Optimizations is trying to do whatever it feels like it needs to. This is why I would like to disable it in the properties, sadly Avast doesn’t allow it. While I am sure there is a good reason Avast locks the user out of changing things in the properties window, this is one option I would hope avast allows us to tick and shut off.
I am using the free version, so it is possible you can do it in the Premium I suppose, but I am unsure.
