A friend told me to use avast about 6 weeks ago so downloaded it and scanned every other day and it was updated when requierd but last night it came up with a virus ‘maindir’ in C drive .
I am just glad l scan often but have lost my trust with avast. I use spybot and three spyware programs. Went on the web this morning and this virus was linked in a few to avast. Do l need to do anything more. I also have avast set to high.
Before l changed to avast l had avg which have had for years but it found a trogan in C drive, that was cleared but it was found at the star of a scan 4% and last night the virus seemed to be found in the same place.
CAn anyone advise what is best to do now,
jills
Give us the full path and full name of what was found, please.
I’m not at all sure why you say you have lost trust in Avast. What is it failing to do?
Is one of your antispyware programs Adaware?
Hi jills
First of all the Malicious software is ( Unknown )
If possible please post the name of the program causing your system harm
If you can’t or don’t know how to do it i shall take your statement for it
You are saying that your system is infected by a Trojan/malware
I Suggest
Try Avast Pro first make sure it’s up to date then performed an all system scan afterward delete the files which is contaminated with the malware/trojan
Note:
If Avast Fails to remove the malicious software then try the ffl scanner to remove it
1st We have SuperAntiSpyware
link :
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE
the malicos program is some kind of malware/trojan so SuperAntiSpyware is able to detect it and delete it
Guide:
Download SuperAntiSpyware Install to System Update to current Date Look for program setting and check full system scan If the malicious software is Detected then Delete it It will require System Restart to take effect
2nd We Have MalwareBytes’ Anti-Malware
Download link : http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
Guide :
Use the same guide with SuperAntiSpywareMalwarebytes Info
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is considered to be the next step in the detection and removal of malware. We compiled a number of new technologies that are designed to quickly detect, destroy, and prevent malware. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can detect and remove malware that even the most well-known Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware applications on the market today cannot. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware monitors every process and stops malicious processes before they even start. The Realtime Protection Module uses our advanced heuristic scanning technology which monitors your system to keep it safe and secure. In addition, we have implemented a threats center which will allow you to keep up to date with the latest malware threats.
Reminder:
Use the ffl Program if Avast dint succeed on deleting the malwere/trojan.
Always make sure your Avast is Updated :3
Hope This Help :3 ;D
PS.
You say that the malicious software is in your System for Years. So it’s wise to run Windows Repair to repair the damage files

I suggest:
- Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.
- Clean your temporary files.
- Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
- Use SUPERantispyware, MBAM or Spyware Terminator to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete than.
- Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
- Make a HijackThis log to post here or, better, submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
- Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster or Windows Advanced Care.
- Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.
Hi
just to add to your “to do” list
when AVG uninstalls it frequently does not leave your machine very tidy
leaving
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AVG
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\AVG8Uninstall
among others
AVG came out with an AVG removal tool in July to do a more thourough clean-up than the usual “uninstall” machine
Another gotcha with AVG is that Uninstall will only remove what it installed- it does not know about updates (if you ever did any)
for these reasons I recommend that you run the AVG remover tool
you can find it here
http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools
pick the 32 bit or 64 bit version as appropriate
otherwise hard to find problems may happen
do post up the name and path of the malware if you can find the log
otherwise start with Malware bytes anti malware which both other posters link to
thanks
which other spyware programs do you have ?
