HELP! Avast Asking for Password before Pausing Scan

At times I need to pause my Full System Scan, and Avast asks for a password. I tried my password I use to login on Web, but that won’t work. HOW DO I GET THIS PASSWORD??

Thanks so much!

If it really is avast that is asking for the password, it is the one you set in avast.

It really is Avast, as it pops up when I press “PAUSE” and I tried the one for logging into Avast online and it doesn’t accept that password.

Avast isn’t asking for your avast on-line password used for my.avast.com or forum.avast.com.

There is a password which can be set to protect and preserve your avast program settings, this password is user set. If you didn’t set a program password or you have forgotten it, then it would appear that there is some corruption in your installation.

A clean reinstall is the better option now, which should resolve this.

Avast asks for a password in order to schedule cleaning, etc. THERE WAS NEVER A TIME WHEN I COULD HAVE SET UP A PASSWORD.

No need to shout.

You (or someone else) did set a password on avast.
If you can’t remember the password you will need to perform a clean installation of avast.

I called Avast Tech Support, asked how to do a clean install because the password problem will not allow me to uninstall. Avast won’t accept my online password (which works fine to logon online) and I never set one in the program because there was never an opportunity to do so. The technician said I needed to remove all remnants of McAfee (my former antivirus program). I called McAfee and they sent me the tool, removed all remnants. THE PROBLEM WITH AVAST REMAINS THE SAME, NOTHING’S CHANGED. If I click on Settings, asks for password which it won’t accept. How exactly am I supposed to go about performing a clean install when it asks for a password which it won’t accept in order to do so?? please help. thanks.

Since you can’t use the regular add remove programs/programs and features to uninstall avast use the avast uninstall utility.

  • Download the latest version of avast, 10.3.2223 http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, avastclear.exe http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall avast! - using add remove programs/Programs & Features, if you can’t do that (as appears to be the case) start from the next step, reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Note: save the copy of avastclear.exe so it can be reused as some users are reporting that after running it, it is self-deleting.

Wow, finally. An answer that makes sense and actually works. David R, you’re the ONE.

One reason to NOT set a password in the first place. Avast can forget the password, or you forgot it, and then you must resort to following DavidR’s advice to reset things to proper operation.

As avast self-defense is set as on as default, it will ask you if you want to allow a change to it via a pop-up window. Click deny if you do not want a change to be made to avast, whether you accidentally initiated it, or the change was due to malware attack, and you will be good to go.

IMO, avast passwords are only needed if you have users on your system you do not trust. Which really begs the question in that case.

You’re welcome.

Sometimes the user doesn’t set a password and for whatever reason avast believes one to have been set, possibly corruption in the installation. At least there is a way using the avast uninstall utility.

I searched until I finally found a way to go in and institute a password. Now everything works as it should, thanks to David R who came up with the answer. BRAVO!

Glad that you have now resolved it and that I could help.
