So, here’s the deal. I was cleaning out the viruses on my bosses old computer and ran a boot scan with Avast. I had previously just put spyware terminator on it also. Before i did the reboot so that Avast could scan i had spyware terminator try and remove two files. One of the files could not be removed by spyware terminator. I also ran CCleaner for registry issues and such. The main thing i was trying to get rid of was a program called antiviruspro2009. I rebooted the PC and Avast went through its motions. Everything was fine until a certain file came up that was infected. It was a windows file and it asked me if i was sure i wanted to delete it. I pushed 2 (delete all) and Avast then proceeded to delete all the files associated with windows that were infected. I know, bad choice on my part. So now, when the PC starts it runs the windows xp load screen then goes to a blue screen that says (spyware terminator is deleting two files- 1 file deleted- 1 file could not be removed.) then it starts a loop of doing this over and over and over again. It goes back to the xp load screen, then the blue screen, tells me spyware terminator stuff again, repeat… Is there any way for me to fix this? I can get into bios screen but that’s it. I can’t get in to safe mode, nor do i know how on this pc for some reason (HP Pavil 743c). Also, there’s probably no chance of my boss actually having a copy of his re-install or original OS CD. Thanks in advance.
System repair needs disk
Phone HP for safe mode instructions
Get rid of spyware terminator 'cos it sounds like it is scheduled to carry out those actions but can’t
I would contact Hp for a restore CD to reinstall the original OS.
Do you know what the files that were deleted were?
I think you already know this, but when you get an alert that tells you that you have an infection and you are given the options of actions to take, it is safer to put items into the Avast Virus Chest rather than delete. In your case, as you learned the hard way, you have now deleted important files that are needed for the machine to run. If the files were put into the Chest, the files would be safe there and could be at a later date rescanned to see if the infection was a false positive and later restored or you could see what the files were and obtain those files from another source. So in the future, play it safe by taking the action of “Put the item in the Virus Chest.”
Please start your own thread as this is different from the OP’s thread and will only confuse things. Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php, scroll down to the Avast Free/Pro/Suite forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there. Thank you.
Also, delete your email from your post here (and others in the future) so spammers do not harvest it.
Hi,
Try booting in safe mode with networking by hitting F8 as the computer is starting and doing system restore to another restore point?.I f the computer will run try update avast and try and download malware bytes and do a scan with this and remove what it finds in safe mode with networking. Boot normally if computer then runs ok then run a boot scan with avast and move any files to chest
Whoops misread the post as cannot use safe mode. Then try last known config option. If the viruses have corrupted the system restore points then you are out of luck. An XP install cd is req sp3 what ever service pack you are on and boot from that to select repair windows.
Safe mode would be ideal. But you stated you can’t boot into it. To enter safe mode repeatedly tap the F8 (as stated in a previous post) key while your machine is booting. If it won’t boot into safemode then see below.
Before starting the following please read through it first and decide what may work (or may not work) for you.
Are you at a point where you can hit alt-control-delete and have it bring up task manager? I’m not sure if the boot has gotten that far or not.
If you can then I would:
kill the spyware terminator process (if it is possible)
In task manager go to file then New task (run) then type in msconfig.exe then go to the startup tab and untick the startup for spyware terminator.
Another way is from task manager go to file then New task (run) then type in regedit.exe and go to HKLM and/or HKCU =>software/microsoft/windows/CurrentVersion/Run and delete the entry for spyware terminator run. (be very careful of what you delete here)
I don’t know if spyware terminator has a self defense module that would prevent this though.
If you can open task manager with alt-cont-delete then try New task (run) then type in explorer.exe
If you can’t open task manager by using alt-control-delete then this won’t work.
When you are able to get windows to boot then I would remove spyware terminator. What I posted above is an attempt to kill Spyware Terminator in hopes that it would allow windows to boot properly since I am uncertain whether or not you can get into safemode. Im not sure which windows files may have been deleted but there certainly could be a conflict with Avast and Spyware Terminator. Before you remove it make sure you check the quarantine or virus chest for important files that may have been sent there inadvertantly. Hopefully XP has not been damaged.
If none of the above helps (including what others have posted above), and you can’t come up with a recovery cd or image or haven’t figured out a way to boot into safe mode, then there is the option of a rescue CD. Google “rescue CD” and choose a legitimate one. I know Avast is working on a rescue CD but am not sure of its availability.
Here are some instructions for removing the antiviruspro2009 rogue (if you can get windows to start).
