Help! Avast hangs on install, will not progress

Help, I have not been able to find an answer or solution in the forums (maybe I missed something) or FAQs. I have a fairly new Asus zenbook ux305, it came with a free trial period of mcafee, which gave me no end of trouble especially internet connection and speed problems, I finally managed to uninstall it and ran the mcpr.exe file from their website to completely get rid of it and it said it was successful. Since then the computer has been working amazing, very quick and no problems until now. I have used avast in the past and its a great program so wanted to use it again as a virus program but it will not get past what seems like the loading screen. I have downloaded the file avast_free_antivirus_setup_online from multiple sources and even the offline installer avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline. Always get the same problem. I run as administrator, click ok to allow the install and then it (the installer not the computer) just sits and does nothing. I’ve tried rebooting many times, i downloaded ccleaner and ran it, that has not worked, no other programs are running, i’ve disabled windows defender, nothing seems to work. If I end the process from the task manager and retry it comes up saying the installation is already running please try again later. I can click to see the log but there is nothing in the log file. After ive done this i can close it and then the installation file pops up in the task manager and i can end that process then try again or reboot and try again then it just happens again. I should note the I can still use the computer and do anything else on it and it still works and is unaffected, but the avast install box just sits there with the animated bar continuously moving. Any help would be appreciated as I do like avast, have used it in the past and would like to be able to use it again. Thanks

I should add I am running windows 10 64bit, the avast install files are supposed to be for 32 and 64 bit but the intallation file showing up in the task manager says 32…

Reboot
Run avastclear ( https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility )
Try the offline installer again (latest version > https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=197955.0 )

the uninstaller doesn’t progress or do anything, the same problem as the install files, other programs like ccleaner seem to instal without a problem, only avast wont work

Start avastclear while in safemode.

avastclear worked in safe mode, but i still have the same issue, avast offline and online both (different attempts) still running in the background doing nothing. I tried the default uninstall as well as the avast free uninstall, no difference. Should I try running the install file from safe mode after the avastclear.exe? Never heard of this being done before, might it cause any issues? Thanks for the help so far.

You can’t install avast in safemode.
I suggest you get (and run) Farbar and attach the logs to your next post.
Let’s see if there perhaps is something that is causing the problem.

What version of Windows 10 ??? What other security programs are installed ???

I am running windows 10 home 64bit, i had macafee installed before as it had come with the computer for a short time and had serious problems with it slowing down and giving me unstable internet and then had more problems removing it, I had to disable the services basically following the steps here: http://www.wikihow.com/Uninstall-McAfee-Security-Center and then run the mcpr.exe. I had tried the basic uninstall processes and removing it from programs etc and kept running into problems but following the steps at wikihow I did finally manage to remove it. Once I finally got rid of it the computer sped up incredibly and I have had no issues since until I tried to install avast. (I don’t like not having a virus program and have used avast in the past with no problems, I’m sure there wont be any in the future but i just cannot get it to install) Other program installs and updates seem to have no problems whatsoever. I have no other security programs installed that I am aware of or can find, this is a fairly new laptop only a little more than a couple months old. I will try running mcrp.exe in safe mode, reboot and then try running rate in safe mode as well (disconnected from the internet) and then try again the install of avast. Hope it works this time, thanks again for the help.

Thank you sooo much, I’m not exactly sure what it was that made it work but it finally did. mcpr and rate did not want to run in safe mode, then rate gave me some errors in normal mode, it could have been trying to run these and the install offline, i re ran avast clear a few times, anyway whatever it was it finally worked and I am now up and running and registered again with avast! Again thanks a lot, I was almost ready to reset the system back to factory standards but you saved me the hassle of having to do that and re install everything else. Thanks again!!! ;D ;D ;D

You’re welcome.

I do recommend to keep monitoring everything to see if it all keeps working.
