Can anybody please tell me how to undo this? I spent two days clean installing Windows XP, updates, service packs, custom windows settings, drivers, etc, etc. I let it all burn in for hours. Then did several restarts to burn it all in. Everything was working beautifully. Then installed avast home free. Now It won’t boot to the desk top. It gets to the welcome screen, user sign in icon. I click the user login icon and shortly afterwards, the screen goes black with just a mouse pointer displayed. Remains frozen to this black screen indefinately.
Can anybody please tell me how to save my two days of installation of XP?
Strange! Does it not start in Safe Mode? (tapping F8 during startup)
You should be able to uninstall avast! from there.
Were there any other low-level resident programs (not necessarily AV) installed prior to avast? e.g. Firewall with HIPS or behaviour blocking, Threatfire, WinPatrol, even Process Explorer set to start with Windows?
The only non-windows program that was installed on this machine prior to Avast and so far was Norton Ghost 9.0. There were four initial windows xp updates. Then service packs 2 and 3. Then Norton Ghost 9.0. Then Explorer 7. Then 38 additional windows xp updates including .Net and .Net updates, numerous security updates, Media Player 11 and a media player update, etc. There were alot of restarts and burn in time after Norton Ghost. The system was working fine. Then Avast. Then on the following restart, it hung.
I have had both Norton Ghost 9 and Avast running together on my windows 2000 machine successfully for years.
Thank you for the suggestion. I will try safe mode and uninstall.
