oh you’re on XP I suppose…that’s an issue with this pre-release, sorry about that. Attempt a repair with the uninstaller and reboot. If it still doesn’t work your only way out will be to uninstall everything and re-install 5.0.594, which you would have had to do anyway to get rid of the inconsistent state of Avast.
use this program to uninstall http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
then reinstall avast internet security and it should work
that same problem happened to me once before and worked for me
don’t use the beta release…
scroll down and download the one in english not the buy and download link http://www.avast.com/internet-security#tab3
hope this helps you…
the normal uninstaller removes much more stuff than the dedicated removing tool. The tool should be used only if uninstalling normally doesn’t work for any reason.
ps: check and see for yourself, uninstall with both methods and see what’s left ;D
Send an email to sales (at) avast (dot) com with the same email you’ve used to bought avast and explain.
Please, upload (attach) the avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).
If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.
I am having the same exact problem today. Everything is just shut down I can not get it to open and when I try the ‘’ Fix Now’’ I only get a message stating ‘’ unable to start file system shield…shield is unreachable’'. I get that message fro anything I try to start…
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.

Thanks. I uninstalled the normal way. Did not use the installer you posted just used the Add / Remove Programs. Downloaded Avast once again and reinstalled. Had to re register but it is now working great again…Thank you for your help…
