Help! Can't boot Windows Vista 32 bit \windows\system32\Drivers\aswVmm.sys

I’m having the same problem I see that others are having . Please help! I followed the directions/steps on the forum and have attached an frst log.

The problem first seemed to arise after updating Avast free version, then my display started acting funny and now I have the screen “Windows failed to start”

Thank you!!

Initially I will restore the registry and see what that does. When you say the screen went funny what was it actually doing ?

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press fix
Try a normal boot

Ok, I did that, but I’m still getting the same screen/message =

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem…etc.
File: \Windows/System32/Drivers/aswVmm.sys
Status: Oxc000000d
Info: Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt.

:frowning:

Thank you for your help!

I forgot to answer your other question…the screen started flickering and then at different areas on the screen, the colors started to break down.

File: \Windows/System32/Drivers/aswVmm.sys Status: Oxc000000d Info: Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt.
That information tells me exactly what is wrong

You will need to re-install Avast on completion

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press fix
Try a normal boot

Ok, I did that, but now I get the attached screen. No longer have that specific error code though.

Are you able to access safe mode or boot normally ?

No, when I try it just restarts and comes back to the same screen. Ugh!

Could you run a fresh FRST scan for me please

Sure. Please see attached. Thanks again!

OK this looks slightly different now

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press fix
Try a normal boot

Done, but getting same message/screen. :frowning:

Do you have the Vista CD and we can try a repair install

Yes, I do, so I’m in the process of doing it and this screen popped up:

Do you want to restore your computer using System Resore?
Startup Repair can try to restore your computer to an earlier point in time when it worked correctly.
This repair will not change personal data, but it might remove some programs that were installed recently.
You cannot undo this restoration.

Should I choose Restore or should I choose Cancel?

Choose a restore point and see what happens

I picked a restore point, but ended up with this message:

Failed due to unspecified error. The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002) Error code 5300:0119

Unfortunately it looks like a re-install is required. You can use the Reatogo desktop to back up your data

Thank you so much for all of your help. Dumb question though…how do I use Reatogo desktop to back up my data. I’m never done a reinstall before. Do I just do it from the Vista CD? Sorry for all the questions!

No problem, treat the reatogo desktop as a standard XP system and copy any files you need to a USB stick

Then when you are ready just do a re-install from the CD.
There is a re-install where the old data will be backed up
See here for a tutorial http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/241565-custom-install-vista.html

I reinstalled Vista, but then the screen goes black, then opens back up with this message:

Display Driver R300 stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

But, then it does it again and freezes up the computer or just goes to a black screen.

I tried uninstalling the Radeon X1300 drivers and restarted so they would reinstall, but I’m still having the same problem.

Any chance you can help me with this? Thanks again SO much!
