Help! Can't enable on-access protection!

We had a thunderstorm today, and it knocked out our electricity, and when it came back on and my computer re-booted, my Avast on-access protection was disabled. Well, my computer had been running a LOT slower lately, and it just so happens that with Avast disabled, it is running like a dream again!

Anyway, I know it’s not safe to not have it running, so I tried to “start on-access protection” and nothing happens! I am running version 4.8 home edition on Windows XP. I am still able to run a scan, and I did so; everything is fine there. I also checked for updates, and it’s all updated as well. What else can I do? ???

Thanks!

What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?

How did you try to start the on-access protection ?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

It would probably be best to first Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Thank you for your reply; I guess I just needed a new license key because mine was expired. ::slight_smile: All is well now!

The protection shouldn’t be disabled just because your license expired, what you wouldn’t be able to do is update, but the rest should remain the same.

Thankfully it has somehow resolved the problem, so all is well in the world.

Welcome to the forums.

I think other features of avast will be blocked… can really the user keep an installation without the correct key installed (demo or trial, home, pro)?
