HELP! dont know where to start!!!

Hi all you wonderful technicals,
I have never used a forum! I am 40 and know a little about computers, but mostly instinctively. I have been given a laptop that I think came with a mess of trojans and viruses. Not sure. Just read about Avast and downloaded it and it has been pleeping, scanning, restarting this laptop eversince. The problems I had with the laptop before seems to have gone. Unable to type, cursor deathly slow. Now I am left in the computer virus, hi tech, void. Avast keeps worning of a trojan but sends me cricular as I follow the advice…

File name: D\2sm66.exe
Malware name: Win32:Amvo[Trj]

Suggests moving to chest??? Dont know what a ‘chest’ is in this case.
when I try to delete the malware I get the same notification from Avast and around I go again!!!

Might it be a false positive??? what is a false positive?

Terribly sorry I really dont know my onions here

Anyone out there? Can you help?

if you just got that laptop, it is likely that you don’t have any personal data saved on it yet. Therefore, if infested with Trojans or else, you should repartition and reformat the HDD entirely (except the recovery partition if there’s one) and go for a Windows reinstall. If you don’t know how to do that, ask for help here and browse the web for more.
Actually, if there’s a recovery partition, use it to reinstall. If it’s gone already, you need a set of CDs/DVDs to restore the system. Or a genuine OEM/Retail copy of Windows.

It is a possible rootkit. If you still want to maintain the data. Please download the following:

First, download, install, update & scan with Malwarebytes Antimalware

Then…

Please download HJTsetup.exe
2. Save HJTsetup.exe [preferably, in your desktop.]
3. Install Hijack This to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
3. Continue to click Next in the setup until you get to see Select Addition Tasks.
4. Put a check on Create a desktop icon then click Next. Continue following the next prompts until you reach the last part.
6. On the last part, click Finish. Hijack This Main Menu will appear.
7. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. A scan will be processed and when its done, notepad will appear.
8. On notepad, copy the entire log through clicking on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy.
9. Head back here in the forums and paste the copied files onto your next reply.

NOTE: DO NOT let Hijack This fix anything yet.

the chest is a safe place where you can send infected files where it can’t do no damage to your computer. And from there you get more option to handle that infection raider then delete it. so its recommend at first option to send an infected file to the chest rather then deleting it. Hopes this help you understand a bit about the chest and good luck with your malware problem.
