Help! Error Msg When Installing Avast

Hi,

I previously used Avast but recently decided to download the latest free version on my Windows Vista computer. But when I tried to install it, an error message pops up during the set-up extraction process.

An error 1006 (000003EE) has occurred. Try to download the set-up file again.

I’ve downloaded the program several times trying different things each time - uninstalling my old program using the removal tool, disengaging my firewall (and I checked I don’t have Nvidia installed as it was suggested to be a problem on some other boards), clearing my temp files etc. I still receive this error message so the installation process can’t even be initiated.

So I was wondering if you have any ideas otherwise I’ll have to look at getting another antivirus program. :frowning:

Thanks.

I have never experienced this so I can only give unproven suggestions.

Have you used the developers uninstall utility to remove all of your previous antivirus solutions?
Here is a list of uninstall utilities. → -http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

After running the uninstall utilities for each program that has been on your machine try installing avast.

If the above doesn’t solve the problem, then try the following.

  1. Download and install ccleaner and scan for registry errors. -http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner

  2. Use a different download location for avast - filehippo.com or majorgeeks.com or avast’s website.

  3. Use a different browser. Disable add-ons.

  4. Download and run Malwarebytes free from filehippo.com. I wonder if malware might be the cause of this?

According to Avast! team an error 1006 (000003EE) is most likely related to a broken installer. Corrupted either when it was downloaded to the comp or during installation.

You may try this installer:

Thanks Charyb, I’ll try your suggestions later.

Iroc9555, I downloaded the installer you suggested but when I tried to run it, I got a message from Windows stating the Avast software setup engine has stopped working. I don’t know why this one isn’t work for me either, but it’s really frustrating. I really hope someone has an answer for me. Thanks.

Is there any other security installed on the system ? which firewall are you running ?

Note that there shouldn’t be any issues with Nvidia either that iv heard of.

I have Spybot and Malwarebytes on my computer as well as Microsoft Security. I did try disabling Microsoft’s firewall, but that didn’t seem to make any difference.

So I’m guessing there’s something wrong with my computer specifically because I’ve tried downloading the file from Avast’s website, the link provided to me here and filehippo (I assume they’re from all different sources). :frowning:

hi mlau,

Spybot is obsolete and archaic. Try turning off Tea-Timer before attempting to install. Big boy on the block is Malwarebytes now. Malwarebytes is compatible with Avast!

If that does not work, here for security program uninstallers: http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

If you spot a program you have uninstalled and have run in the past, use that uninstaller to remove all remnants, including all old versions of Avast! If running another a/v atm, uninstall that first, then use SingularLabs.

As mchain has said spybot is obsolete these days, i’ll also mention that you need to uninstall Microsoft Security essentials as you cant have two AV’s on the same system even if one is disabled as there will still be active low level drivers running causing conflict.

To remove MSE, got to:
http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
Once there, select item 23b

Thank you for everyone’s advice. Unfortunately it seems best to just get another anti-virus program at this time as none of my earlier efforts seem to help.
