Hi! I would like to ask for your help in removing this malware that’s been popping out of my tray for quite some time now. Here is a screenshot of the alert:

Please tell me if you need more details on this. Thank you!

Please follow the directions for scans in this topic and attach as many of the logs as you can run.
Logs to assist in cleaning malware

FRST.txt, Addition.txt, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log and aswMBR.txt. Thanks.

Hi! thanks for responding. As for the aswMBR, it is not working here on my laptop and it sends me to a blue screen that says there is an error when running the program.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

AdwCleaner by Xplode

Download AdwCleaner from here or from here. Save the file to the desktop.

NOTE: If you are using IE 8 or above you may get a warning that stops the program from downloading. Just click on the warning and allow the download to complete.

Close all open windows and browsers.

- Vista/7/8 users: Right click the AdwCleaner icon on the desktop, click Run as administrator and accept the UAC prompt to run AdwCleaner.

You will see the following console:

- After the Scan has finished the window may or may not show what it found and above, in the progress bar, you will see: Waiting for action. Please uncheck elements you don't want to remove.
- Click the Clean button.
- Everything checked will be deleted.

done with the fix. please see attached file for the results. thanks.

How is your system running now?

the alert stopped popping out but I want to know if my system is all clean now. Is there any action I could take to prevent this from happening again in the future?

Avast, MBAM and MCShield would be a good combination. You can get MCShield here and then make sure to run a weekly scan (at least) with MBAM.

I would also recommend upgrading from / moving on from XP. It is no longer being updated / fixed by Microsoft and no matter how much protection you load on it, the base OS is flawed and will allow exploits anyway.

Your logs are clean! We need to clean our tools off your system and get you on your way ....

Clean up of Malware Removal Tools
Now that we are through using these tools, let’s clean them off your system so that should you ever need to have malware removed again (we hope not) fresh, updated copies will be downloaded.

  • Download Delfix from here to your desktop and double click it to start the program
    • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is ticked
      Also tick:
    • Create registry backup
    • Purge system restore
    • Reset system settings

http://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/dbreeze2/just%20stuff/DelFixSelectall_zps0f04cec4.png

  • Click Run
    • The program will run for a few moments and then notepad will open with a log. Note: Please save this log first before rebooting your system (if asked to); DelFix does not save the log as it is trying to remove all traces of our work on your system. Please attach the log in your next reply.
You can delete any log files left on your desktop as these are no longer needed.

Thanks for hanging in here with us and have a very merry Holidays!!!

Is there any action I could take to prevent this from happening again in the future?
The truth is that you can't. Doctors can't make a cure for a disease that is not known (yet). ;)

But you can lower the risk that it happens again.
Some tips:

  • Do not use a account with administrator rights for daily use, use a limited account instead.
  • Keep avast, MBam and McShield up-to-date.
  • Use a add-blocker and a script blocker.
  • Use a hardware firewall
  • Before downloading/installing (new) software, (re)search first.
Often a simple search can tell you a lot already. (e.g. Google > software name malware)
When in doubt, ask here if something is trusted (general topics forum)

Hello! Attached here is the Delfix log. Let me know if it’s all good now. Thanks.

Everything looking as good as it can!

Happy Holidays!!
