[b]I have Avast 4.7 Home version. I use Windows XP. I do have a firewall, which is Sygate, but I haven’t been using that when I try to use Avast in case that is the problem. I have no other antivirus installed on my computer. I have had Avast for quite awhile with no problems. Recently, I installed a secure wireless router for my ISP, and it wasn’t too long after that when I started having problems. When Avast is on and I try to open a Web page, it shows, “Problems opening page.” Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do?
If you disable avast WebShield, will it help?
Right click the ‘a’ blue icon, ‘On access…’ the first option, click on ‘Details’ button, choose WebShield at left and Terminate button at right. Answer ‘No’ just to test the system. Could you connect.
Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
Depending if you set the Standard Shield to High level of sensitivity. But it’s not the best balance between performance and protection.
The problem is in your firewall blocking WebShield to connect. Maybe you can try disabling Sygate, maybe you can uninstall it and install again (or change to other, better, free firewalls like Comodo or PCTools).
I will try the other firewalls. But, since this problem, I haven’t used the Sygate firewall since I was attempting to eliminate everything to discover what the problem was. I reset the Standard Shield to high. Thank you so much for helping me. I am a full-time college student so I LIVE on my computer.
