Help i cant get past 2% in standard scan

Hope some one can help me as i think i have a virus.
When i go to scan in a standard scan my antivirus
stops always now at 2%, i cant seem to get past
this … do i have a virus, and please help me as what
to do.

If you have XP, vista32bit or Win2k, you could enable a boot time scan. Right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, a memory scan will take place followed by the opening of the Simple User Interface, Menu, ‘Schedule boot-time scan…’ Or see http://www.digitalred.com/avast-boot-time.php.

Since this scans before windows starts hopefully any virus wouldn’t be active, if any detections are made send them to the chest, don’t delete.

What folder is it in when it is at this point ?
Are there and very large files in that folder ?

Hi david thank you for you fast response… i have windows vista and i have tried boot scanning but it just blacked out … and i had to turn my pc off… i sounds awful dosnt it ???

I don’t have vista so I can’t be a great deal of practical help.
What about the other questions, location it stops and big files, etc. ?

What is your firewall, there have been some strange issues with Online Armor ?

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
Though technically this is before AVs get started, avast being the only one I know that offers this boot-time scan function.

Are you able to boot into safe mode ?
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).

  1. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.
  2. MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, On-Demand only in free version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later.

my fire wall is noramal windows fire wall,I only run one antivirus and that is Avast, i can begin to boot in safe mode but once it gets to 7% it just goes blank and stops … then nothing … blank screen so i have to re start my pc. ok im down loading this super anti spyware now ill let you know … thanks.

Are you using a laptop? Are the fans working?

yes im using a lap top and yes the fan is working fine… i did the boot scan but once again at 7% my screen went blank, i also have tired panda active scan … i get message error and micro trend scan … also error. I have tried re installing avast but nothing still the same… ??? Oh it wouldnt let the spy ware do any thing either wouldnt down load just got stuck lilke my antivirus.???

The behavior smells overheating… but I’m not sure.
Did you have other installed antivirus in this computer in the past? How did you uninstall them?

No iv had no other antivirus … only avast

Does the boot-time scan report file (Avast4\DATA\report\aswBoot.txt) has more info.
Anything into avast logs?

yes the boot time scan does report scan when scanning but only will go to 7% then blacks out and blank black screen…i do see it scanning through the data but then stops … ill have a look in the avast logs "says
virus data baseVPS 081122 was automatic and data basse
VPS virus data base VPS081122-0 was automatic

Is there any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’?
And the avast logs?

No i guess there are no errors is this how i find errors in admin tools

ok it looks like i do have errors

I can’t guess with the info displayed…
Can you run ashLogV.exe and see if any other related info is reported near the time the scan crashed?

How do i do that???

Check this file, Avast4\DATA\report\aswBoot.txt that Tech suggested, if your boot-time completed then the report should have been completed to if no report, something stopped the boot-time scan (possibly you rebooting).

Do you have power saving settings enabled, is it possible that your laptop is going into power saving or hibernation, etc. ?
If so you could try disabling those power settings and see if that makes any difference.

Sorry I don’t use a laptop nor hibernation mode on my system.

The errors in the event viewer wouldn’t relate to the boot-time scan as windows isn’t running.

But you should open one of the latest event viewer entries and show the detailed information about the error.

Right click the ‘a’ blue icon and choose avast Log Viewer.

Is the log viewer on that menu by default, I can’t remember it (or the avast Virus Chest) is in the menu or you have to edit the avast4.ini file ???

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashLogV.exe

ok this is what i have in the log viewer …
