HELP! i do not understand what i could have done wrong...

i was running the lastest version of Avast Home Edition, today i saw the green box telling me that a new version was available, so i clicked the link to download the latest, i then let it load and followed the instructions to reboot. Once i did, i received the following error:
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application.
ashAvast.exe

i click OK and the program terminates.

if i try to uninstall the program, the computer freezes up, if i try to re-install a downloaded version, the computer freezes.

When i attempted to use the aswclear.exe utility, the following message comes up:

The avast! self protection module is enabled. For this reason, the operation cannot be completed. … to disable the avast! self protection…

Of course i cannot because i cannot run the program…

HELP!

My System is a Win XP MCE with SP3.

thanks,

Avi

Can you run ashdisp.exe and get access to the avast self-defense module?
Can you try to an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first. If it does not work, run it in Safe Mode.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation. Run in Safe Mode if it fails in normal Windows.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

i cannot run ashdisp.exe, same failed error…

you say uninstall from CP, i cannot the system freezes.
You say run in safe mode from CP, how do i do this?
I will attempt to remove in XP safe mode

thanks!

I have solved the problem, rebooting in Safe mode and using the clean utility worked.

thank you for your assistance!

Avi
