Help, I downloaded the new update and now email scanner dont work!

Hello, I downloaded the new update and when i restarted my computer it said email is not being scanned. And now it screwed up my email! I can’t even get my mail. And in the start menu>avast there is no resident scanner wizard. Help!!

What is your operating system, if it is win 98 find ashpopwiz in the avast 4 folder and run it

Nope, I am running XP and the version of avast is 4.6.763. I have tried everything!

Ok go for a repair by going to control panel - add/remove - select avast and on the left will be a window select repair ( you must be online). Also are you getting any warning messages and when you left click the @ are you showing internet mail as being active…

Also, your firewall (if you use any) might be blocking the Internet Mail module (ashMaiSv.exe) from accessing the Internet - since the EXE file has changed during the update.

I repaired, it seems to be running. what are the setting’s supposed to be in incoming and outgoing mail? I will check the firewall settings, thanks

I am recieving mail through my alltel.net account but it is not being scanned and I can’t even recieve from yahoo mail.

Is your altnet account pop3 and http, if it is https and not pop3 then the mail scanner will not check it (secure protocol)

Ok, it’s checking my alltel. But keep getting message invalid username and/or password when it is trying to get yahoo. And it is the right username and password.

You might need to extend the time out unfortunately I have never played around in that area, mayhap someone else will be along soon, sorry

Thanks for all your help!

I can add an account into my email from yahoo and it come’s in fine. But when I change the incoming to 127.0.0.1 it wont work.

Welcome to the forums, Chrissypa!

Normal Yahoo email is web based and as such is not scanned by the email scanner. There is a YPops, I think, that is a paid version of Yahoo email and if you are using that, then your email would downloaded to either OutLook or OutLook Express … not sure which. Are you using YPops? ???

Thanks for the welcome and yep I figured it out! I do have the paid yahoo and the incoming and outgoing has to be left the way it normally is and when I downloaded the new update it changed it to 127.0.0.1. I have been using avast for years! I tried Norton and had WAY too many problems! I love avast!!Thanks! Chrissy

You are welcome, Chrissy … glad you got it working correctly!

Be sure to come back often, learn more, and maybe help others.

With XP the email scanning is transparent and there should be no need to use the 127.0.0.1 setting in your email server settings, that is one of the reasons there is no sign of the mail protection Wizard in the Start, programs list.

When I look at my OE email account settings, everything is as it would be if avast wasn’t there, e.g. no changes.
I can’t see how the update would change these settings, assuming your still using XP. The only thing I can think of is your firewall (you didn’t say what it is) could somehow be blocking, but if it is allowing in one email account and not the other, that is strange.

Also what is your email program ?

David,

I found Chrissypa’s post a little confusing.

It was not clear if there is real POP3 access to a Yahoo account in which case, as you note, 127.0.0.1 would not come into the picture since a real server name would be used.

If however a third party program (suchs as the free YPops) was being used to convert Yahoo mail retrieval from http to a POP3 stream then the server would need to be specified as localhost or 127.0.0.1.

Either way I cannot understand how an avast update or repair would have affected settings of a mail client on an XP system.

Quote from Chrissy:

I do have the paid yahoo ......

CharleyO - I saw that - so then where do you think the discussion of 127.0.0.1 came from?

I was guessing that since Chrissy says she has the paid yahoo, it would be a POP3 account. Therefore, Chrissy realized that 127.0.0.1 was not needed.

Maybe I am wrong … or … maybe I am misunderstanding the discussion. ??? :-[ :-\

Oh well, you guys will straighten me out on it, I’m sure! 8)
