help i must be a dumb ass I keep getting a splash screen error

Hi
I hope someone can help. I am using windows vista on a new laptop and have installed Avast which I have been using with windows xp on my desktop with no problem.

Now for some reason when ever I open Avast to run a scan or set a boot scan and it loads up i get an error. A small screen pops up telling me that the splash screen for avast has stopped working and windows wants to close the program.

If I select close program it closes (yes I know obvious) but if I ignore it then avast runs fine.

Also got nailed with a Trojan which caused Avast to crash completely and I had to reboot my laptop.

Please tell me what I am doing wrong.

Cheers Jay

 Hi :

New Laptops usually come with an antivirus program like Norton or McAfee ;
did you completely uninstall “it”, along with the appropiate “Removal Tool”
PRIOR to installing Avast ? Please give details .

Hi Spiritsongs

Yeah it had Norton which was on a trial. Have always got on well with Avast so decided to give it the shove.
Took bloody ages to get it to remove but got it removed through the control panel. There was no uninstall as part of the program.
I assume I have removed it all, but now I suppose I ain’t to sure.

AAAAAArgh what with giving up smoking and trying to sort this out my mind is ready to explode…

Just hating Vista as well cause all the cracks i have for games and programs (borrowed of course) wont work so having to figure it all out again. I swear they do it on purpose

Any help would be good.

Cheers Jay

Try this:

I don`t think Add or Remove Programs will get rid of Norton completely.

Hi…

No, it probably won’t. From my experience, Norton will typically leave registry entries and perhaps other bits and pieces behind. If using the NRT does not solve the problem, you may need to go in and manually delete the registry keys. I had to do this once on a computer that I had bought to be used as a public access station, it took quite a while. :frowning:

Best Regards…
