HELP installing avast!

Hi,

I’m trying to install avast 4.8 on my mum’s laptop. It is running windows vista. I have read the installations instructions and understand them. when the file download window pops up it says to run however i don’t have this option, only open or save. i have done both but neither seem to work.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 Hi :

What is/was the Name of the prior AntiVIRUS program ? Be specific as
possible regarding that “name” and version “number” and tell us what steps
were taken to remove that program from your mother’s computer ?

McAfee. And i haven’t tried to remove it yet. should i do that first?

Oh, yes. Save the downloaded Avast installer file somewhere safe, say, the desktop, or a folder you might create just for security downloads (for example), if you haven’t done that already.
Go here: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507&lc=1033 and download the tool halfway down the page, just under step 2. (You might want to browse the article, even print it, there are separate instructions for Vista and XP)

Disconnect from the net, by unplugging the cable. Uninstall McAfee, run the tool, as per the instructions. Reboot whenever prompted.
Install Avast by double clicking the downloaded file. Follow the setup steps. (Personally I would suggest not performing a boot scan on restart as it can take a while. But if you suspect malware on the computer, don’t skip this step.)
Reconnect to the net, get updates for Avast. You should be good to go. The AV is very configurable, works fine on the default settings, but over time you will find the settings you wish to alter (if any).
This forum is a great place to ask about that.

ok i’ve done all that but still i don’t get avast. i get AnitivirusPro 1.0 and i am unable to update it. maybe i have downloaded the wrong file however it is from the avast website and says it is the free home version.
more guidance would be much appreciated.
THANKS

Hmmm. Quite weird. I would say it is most definitely the wrong file.
Can you please post the link to the download page of the site you got this from. I don’t think there is any Avast download that has that name. Either you haven’t got the real Avast site or your browser is being cleverly re-directed, methinks.
Did the computer exhibit any strange behaviour before this? (Apart from using Vista, that is. ;))
[EDIT] on the off chance you have a browser hijack I’m going to recommend you download this program. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php It’s Malware Bytes AntiMalware (MBAM for short) and the page you should end up at on clicking the link looks like the picture below. Click the green download now button. Save it, run the installer by right clicking on it, select “run as> administrator” and install it. Once installed, update it, and run a scan. Be interesting to see if it finds anything.
It is a highly recommended anti spyware scanner/remover. Not a resident AV or AV replacement.
