The latest avast free antivirus version is 5.0.462, but there should be a program update soon, I would get this latest version as avast uses incremental program updates so you don’t have to download it again.
However, you don’t say what your Operating System is and avast 5.0 requires win2k, winXP, Vista or win7 ?
avast also has automatic virus signature updates normally twice a day, these are incremental and usually measure KBs rather than MBs (like many other programs) and are quite manageable even on dial-up. I should know as a dial-up user.

I didn’t say it updates twice a day there is no specific time of day an update is released, during the course of a day it will normally be you get two updates.
It checks for updates every 4 hours if you are on-line and the update if available is a small incremental update which will be automatically downloaded and installed.
There is no fixed size, that is the nature of an incremental update, it will depend on how many new signatures are included in that update, but they are generally small and take a few seconds to download that has been my experience.
i formatted my computer today bcoz i mistakely installed avast in presence of symantec.
now i only have avast.
it is version 5.0.462
virus definiton version is 100309-0
it this latest version i installed?

Krypton you don’t need to format your computer when you accidentally install avast with symantec.
You could have used the removal tool to remove symantec
