Help me!!

Hi everyone,

I am completely useless as most things to do with the computer!

We bought a DELL laptop about 4 weeks which had McAfee installed… this has now expired. We have Windows Vista and my emails aren’t sending… we are receiving mail ok, but when I try to send something it just sits in my Outbox. I called Virgin Media and they ran through my account setting with me and everything is ok there.

So I called DELL, they said the’d help me for £40! So I called The Silicon Group where I bought my laptop and they recommended Avast. So I downloaded the free version ok. I still can’t send my emails! ??? ???

I called the shop back and they said I’d need a firewall (which I’m guessing Avast doesn’t do)… so on the advice from someone on here, I tried the Zone Alarm one. Installed fine. Emails still not sending!!

I’m totally confused. I’ve now uninstalled ZA.

Can anyone help me please, I’m completely confused and being heavily pregnant, I’m also STRESSED!

Many Thanks, Gemma.

What is your email program ?
Are you getting any error messages, if so what ?

  1. installing avast won’t resolve your problem of not being able to send email, that problem has to be solved in its own right. avast! isn’t a firewall and installing a firewall won’t solve the inability to send emails for the same reason. However, you absolutely need a firewall, it is an essential part of your system security.

I believe you inability to send email may be related to the previous AV installation. Since you didn’t say what McAfee product it was here are some useful links on uninstall tools to deal with potential remnants of McAfee, choose the applicable link.

McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.

Other than the above suggestion I don’t know why this might be happening.
