I uninstalled 4.7 about a month ago to try other programs that might be a little lighter on resources (I really don’t think I need AV at all, but I’m trying to do the right thing ) Then I heard there was a version 4.8 and some users reported that it worked better. But I just tried installing it 3 TIMES over the last few days and had to uninstall it each time. This is WinXP Home. Here are some of the issues I encountered:
It disabled my fingerprint reader (Softex) which is supposed to appear at the Welcome screen and log me in.
It seemed to conflict with Online Armor or perhaps another program(s). After boot, a LONG time would pass (5 min) where only the Avast globe with the “disabled” minus sign would appear in the taskbar. Then, all the icons in the taskbar would suddenly appear at once (normally they load one at a time) and the Avast globe would change to normal. No applications were available during this time and mousing over the taskbar would produce the hourglass symbol. I tried installing with Online Armor not running and autostart disabled (via WinPatrol), but OA is a persistent critter and always appeared eventually.
It disabled my wireless connection. I had to reboot the wireless router after uninstallation to get it to work.
Any ideas? I am still without an antivirus program. Please don’t suggest “uninstall Online Armor” as I like it.
I have the same problem as you. Others here claim that their Online Armour is working fine. I tried to repair Avast, uninstall it, re-install from scratch. Disable Avast root kit scan - nothing worked. Unfortunately I ended up uninstalling version 4.8 and re-installing 4.7 which works fine. . Sorry I can’t help but at least you know you are not the only one with this problem. I will try again when things settle down and support has time to help isolate this problem.
As an update I uninstalled 4.7 and installed 4.8.1178 beta. I put Online Armour in the learning mode when I installed Avast and everything seems to be working fine so far. I get a red circle in the system tray Icon only for a second on start-up and then everything is ready to go.

my little red circle is a permanent feature, requiring a trip to the Services of Management in w2000 to kick start. not an ideal situation.
The workarounds suggested in the FAQs don’t solve the problem either.
No wonder there are 30,000 registered forum users!
This upgrade showed great promise, but not starting at startup put me further back than i was before.
Is it possible to get at the previous version? :-\
The registered user count is from when the forums started in this format and not a direct result of any issue with the 4.8 update. Whilst there is no doubt you are experiencing problems, that is not the case for all avast user by some way or this forum would be lit up like a Christmas tree.
Have you not tried a clean reinstall to the current version (you didn’t say) ?
If not, I would suggest that first before going back to an older version as that is trying to avoid a symptom than find a solution to stay with a version with more protection.
