I cannot update my avast! 4 home edition. It was working just fine for over a year and suddenly it keeps saying ‘cannot connect to download49.avast.com’ now… i’m obviously connected to the internet or else i couldn’t post this question, i don’t have a firewall, my proxy settings haven’t changed nor has my internet service, and it’s not a network error or network maintainance because this has been a problem for the past 2 months. My antivirus software is so out of date it’s almost a joke.
what do i do? i’ve already uninstalled it and reinstalled.
“It was working just fine for over a year” you are either getting near or have exceeded the Updates expiry date, check the about avast, Registration Key information and ensure your expiry date is valid and not expired (14 months use and you need to re-register). If it has pay a visit to avast! 4 Home Registration and re-register.
What is the full text of the error, you can also check the avast Log Viewer, error or info section and see if there is more info.
Hi! I have the same problem as Jester. But I’ve still got more than 5 months to go before I need to re-register, and when I try to download the program update it says: Cannot connect to download51.avast.com (67.15.189.12:80). It does not say download51 everytime. Yesterday it said download16 (I think!) Have reinstalled before to solve another glitch. The last few lines of the Log says this:
04.10.2006 11:59:56 package: Tried to download servers.def but failed with error 0x20000004.
04.10.2006 11:59:56 general: progress end - 1
04.10.2006 11:59:56 general: progress end - 0
04.10.2006 11:59:56 general: progress thread end
04.10.2006 11:59:57 general: Err:Cannot connect to download51.avast.com (67.15.189.12:80).
hi alan
neither method works. after booting i get a green pop-up which says that a new program update is available and that i should click there to download. i do, and after about 4-5 mins it gives the message i quoted in my earlier mail. when i try a manual update it says the same thing.
don’t tell me i have to uninstall and reinstall once again?? :-\
this is being written with a sense of relief a couple of hours after my last post.
i decided to do some simple work with the “Program Settings” and i hope it will be of help to all the others who may be having similar problems.
In Program Settings click on Update (Connections) and then on the Proxy tab. Here the button was on Auto Detect (use Internet Explorer settings). Now my IE connections were already problematic, wouldn’t connect, and when I clicked on the Test Connection tab in avast it was not connecting. So i clicked the first button Direct Connection (no Proxy) and clicked Test again. This time it worked! Got all my updates and it’s working fine now.
By the way, mine is a home connection broadband through a wireless router and it was only after my IE connection got messed up did my avast connection too!
I prefer using Firefox as my browser and SeaMonkey as my mail client and these 2 were working fine all the time. Now I have to see what I can do with the IE settings! Though I hardly use it except when doing Windows updates and even that’s automatic.
I’ve had a similar problem; when attempting to fetch the june or july update of the program, I would get connection errors and the download failed.
I tried out some solutions that I found on this forum (such as disabling the Windows XP firewall), but nothing worked.
Then finally it occurred to me that the reason the virus database updates did get through was that the connection setting was set to automatic (by default?).
So I changed the setting for program updates (under “Program Settings” → “Update (Basic)”) from “Ask when update is available” to “Automatic” and presto, it worked - I now have the lastest program version.
