help my computer locks up

my computer locks up all the time. i have to just power down. my laptop is only a year old… any advice ???

Hi…

What is the “make and model” of your laptop? What operating system (version of Windows) are you using? Did something, like a new program installation or uninstallation, precede this problem? Is the laptop still covered under warranty?

If you are running Windows XP or Vista, may we see your event viewer logs? Just type “eventvwr” in the “Run” box in Windows XP or the search bar at the bottom of the start menu in Vista.

Also, have you been able to run any kind of virus scan on this system?

Best Regards…

Which antivirus are you using?
Any other security program?
Which is your operational system?
Did you add any hardware recently?

I’m not the original poster, but I’m experiencing a similar problem since installing avast home free trial. I lockup online surfing the net and have to power down manually because absolutely everything stops working; mouse, keyboard, etc.
I suspect the lockups maybe happening when OneCare tries to update and
Avast somehow interrupts the update, but I have no proof of that.

Windows XP SP3 Home Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop (less than a year old).
Avast Home Trial AV
MS Live OneCare, also trial (which has been giving me a popup saying Avast is
interferring with it; in the popup OneCare wants me to uninstall Avast
to correct the problem. heh heh… I’ve just been closing the popup)
Explorer 7

I’ve been told and have read than I should not depend on only one AV to provide
security, so I’ve been trying some different ones to judge their ease of use. I’ve
recently uninstalled Bitdefender Home Trial the day before it was due to expire.
But, if I’m to end up using two AVs, I do not want two that will conflict with
the other.

I have opened event viewer as you suggested the original poster do, and I’ve
found some red !!! in different places, but I don’t know what they mean.

Thanks,Jimmer

Hi…

I’m quite sure that is the problem. :frowning:

It’s never a good idea to use more than one AV program for this very reason. AV’s don’t like sharing “territory.” You will need to choose on or the other, I’m afraid.

Best Regards…
