Help?!? Need advice please...

If anyone could advise me, it would really help… My Avast program put one of its own .dll files in its chest because it was suspicious (I didn’t realize at the time it was an Avast file), and told me I had a virus and had me reboot (about 3 or 4 times). The next day MSN.com showed the headline about the security issue. I can’t open or uninstall or update my Avast, and really feel stuck.

What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast ‘a’ icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections. Or if you can’t open avast, look in the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Warning.log using notepad, this is where the log viewer gets the info from.

I suspect it wasn’t one of its own files rather a file from the moved folder ?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).

  1. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.
  2. MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, On-Demand only in free version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later.

Hi David,

Thank you for your assistance. I was able to open the warning file by going through the file. It shows a lot of errors, and numbers. I tried going through add/remove programs last night, it said it was expired. Also tried to install it again, with no luck. I’m searching through the log now to see if there is a file name anywhere.

The log is in chronological order newest entries at the bottom and we are onlt interested in those relating to virus detection, e.g.
