Help needed for beginner using AVAST for the first time

Hi all,

I am brand new to Avast. I recently downloaded the 4.8 Edition, but I simply don’t know where and how to proceed.
How do I perform a quick scan and a full scan?

Do I need to check for updates, or does it do it automatically?

I also have Zone Alarm installed on my computer. Will Avast and ZA conflict? Do I need to make any settings changes in ZA?

What are the recommended settings in Avast.
