Help!!!! No internet or firewall with Avast 5 Internet Security

OK - here’s the problem. I’ve read what I can in via the search feature but I can’t find anything telling someone who knows very little about computers what to do.

I installed avast 5 internet security on my computer but didn’t remove my original McAfee AV first (I know this was a mistake). I couldn’t turn on the firewall or access the internet. I then uninstalled McAfee. No change. I then went back to the restore point that Avast set up and everything worked but I had no AV so I then reinstalled Avast. Same problem. Went back to the same restore point and then reinstalled McAfee. Everything OK now but McAfee only valid for a few more days. No reply from email tech support at Avast yet.

Can anyone give me an idiot’s stepwise guide on what to do? I’m not stupid just old!

I’m really regretting going for the 2 year deal on this system! Glad I paid by Paypal - maybe I should go for a refund and back to McAfee?

Run avast removal tool, and reboot http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Uninstall McAfee and reboot, then run McAfee removal tool and reboot Nr.19a http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/
Try installing avast again, and reboot after install

Thanks for your quick response. Let me just check I undertsand what you’re saying:

  1. Run the avast removal tool that you have given the link for.
  2. Restart the computer
  3. Remove McAfee using the Add/Remove Programs section of windows
  4. Restart the computer
  5. Run McAfee removal tool you’ve given the link for
  6. Restart computer
  7. Install avast
  8. Restart the computer

Please confirm I’ve got this right before I try

Hi Kato, not correct.

Most AV firms have now produced a dedicated removal tool for removing their AV packages, so you will need to get that first.

This may help - http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

  1. Download McAfee removal tool.
  2. Disconnect internet.
  3. Remove Avast using removal tool - aswclear - reboot
  4. Remove McAfee using removal tool - not add/remove programs - reboot
  5. Install Avast - reboot
  6. Reconnect to internet.

Somehow, I think I posted to the wrong thread with this solution…sorry. I see that this has to deal with having TWO av engines runnning.

Thanks all of you for your detailed help.

Have run the Avast removal tool and next to try is removing McAfee with windows and then their removal tool and try reinstalling Avast. Waiting until I don’t need internet for a few hours incase I have to reinstall McAfee again - takes ages! Will let you know how it goes…

OK I did what Pondus suggested (did a registry clean after removing all systems too) and all working fine. Thank you so much for your help! Key seems to be to remove existing AV with a proper removal tool before installing Avast (simple when you know how).
