Hi this is what I posted on another forum, I wonder if anyone here can help me?

...i ran maxblast and now nothing works My pc has a maxtor 6Y160M0 hard drive. I wanted to do a re-install cos everything wasn't running properly. I created a bootable setup discs using this guide http://www.howtohaven.com/system/cre...etupdisk.shtml but when I used the disc it couldn't install because it couldn't see the hard drive.somone else:So, I got a full install version of XP professional off my bro, and tried that (known to work on other computers he’s installed it on). Same problem. As well as occasionally indicating my hard drive had problems depending on what I did to try and install it (said I would have to have the disc checked for viruses as it wasn’t operating properly.
I then tried Maxblast http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Ma...&downloadID=57
to see if that would format the disc and get it ready for a fresh install. It looks like it should do. The programme ran alright, and then told me to install whatever operating system I wanted on the hard drive. However, it still comes up against the same problem when I boot from the disc.Any ideas? It is possible the hard drive is knackered in some way?
Any help gratefully received. I don’t know a whole lot about operating systems…CHCKDSK is the limit of my knowledge!!!
I'd guess your drive is scsi and XP doesn't have the right drivers built in. At some point it will say press F6 for third party drivers, this is when you need to insert a floppy with the right driver on it. I can't help with which driver you need, try the manual.coolhands
It does indeed say press F6 - I can't fid a driver (think it'd be straight forward wouldn't you...) but thats why I ran maxblast cos I thought that would do it all.. I did use a programme to copy all the existing drivers on the system onto CD, so I must have a copy of it on there. But then it told me to stick a floppy in so what do i do? Can i copy it from the cd to a floppy? I’m using my laptop at the mo - but i do have a floppy disc driver that I can attach to usb.
How can I use my laptop to copy the right file to the floppy?
thanks mate
coolhands:
It does not seem to take notice of the F6 function now - when I press it it just continues with other stuff for a bit.someone else:Then on a blue page that says
Quote:
"Setup was unable to load support for the mass storage device you specified…(more stuff…)*To specify addidtional SCSI adaptors, CD-ROM drives, or special disk controllers for use with windows, including those for which you have a device support disk from a mass storage device manufactuer, press S.
*If you do nota have…blah blah press ENTER"
I copied the drivers onto a floppy, but when I try to use it in this windows setup page, (at the correct moment when it asks you to insert into A: drive) it says “the file txtsetup.oem could not be found”therefore I can’t get any further. Hope this makes sense. I have the driver. Do I need to turn it into a txt format in notepad or something? Or save it as an .oem file? (there are two files in the drivers that i saved - 1 is setup information, (6kb), 1 is a System File (33kb). I presume the System file is the actual driver?
is this not a SATA hard disk? if so you still need the right drivers on a floppy and use the f6 button. you should get the drivers from your motherboard web site.coolhands:
Yeah but read the post above - I've got the drivers but it won't read them.someone else:Anyone??
how old is the version of XP pro? I couldn’t get a pre SP2 release to recognise my SATA drives (during install)someone else:
txtsetup.oem is a univerally formatted txt file that tells the Windows Install how to classify and use the drivers - without it you are pretty much screwed. Also bear in mind you need the drivers for the SATA interface not the disk(s) installed on it so maxor are unlikely to be of any help.
I think there are native SATA drivers in later releases of XP (SP2)? hence my earlier post.
I think it is an SP1 version.
I’ve tried putting other drivers on a floppy but it doesn’t seem to take any notice of F6 when booting from the CD - I have to press F8 and go into setup, then later press ‘S’ whereupon nothing I put on the floppy helps.
Appreciate any pointers from someone here???
