Help Please! DropBox Malware that cannot be solved

On my clean new Windows 7 PC, avast! free antivirus bothers me since I installed Dropbox.

Every few seconds there comes a popup which states “malware blocked: file system protection has blocked a threat”

object: c:\Users\my username\Dropbox.dropbox.cache~8ec4a9d3.tmp
infection: Win32:Malware-gen
action:
process: c:\Users\my username\AppData\Roaming\Dropbox\bin\Dropbox.exe

  1. I tried to delete all the files in the dropbox.cache but they keep regenerating

  2. I suspect i must delete the dropbox.cache on the online version to stop it from regenerating but there isnt any such folder

I am lost as to what to do . Please help

Thank you so much

Hi True indian,

Thanks you for the details. i am going to try this suggestion first to see if it works

Are you able to exit Dropbox, delete the cache contents, then run a virus scan on your local Dropbox folder?

EDIT: It might be a false positive stemming from partially downloaded files that falsely triggers your antivirus, that is why it keeps downloading, Dropbox is trying to sync and that bit keeps being tagged as a malware and removed.

Solution:
Set the cache folder as an exception to scanning. Malware cannot run unless executed by a human and most people will not go into the cache folder to open files. Just ensure your antivirus is still active on your actual Dropbox folder and it should be fine.
