help please!

i know i have a trojan, but avast isnt picking it up. what do i do?

Hi and welcome ,
There are a number of ways to deal with it . Give this site a visit http://www.security-ops.tk/ ans try one of the online scanners ,probably Panda is best.
keep a note of what they find and also look at adaware or spybot s&d

Please don’t use panda’s on-line scanner, it leaves their virus pattern signatures file on your HDD unencrypted, leading to subsequent false positive alerts by avast or any other AV.

How do you know you have a trojan?
What is its location? example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?
What is your OS?

thanks for you replies.
i know i have a trojan, as a couple of months back i did a scan, using different software and it showed up.
i didnt delete the file, so it must still be there.
i have to say, i dont understand the tecnical side of things, so some of the advice given went straight over my head!
i do have the full file name of the infected one written down.
windows\localsettings\temporaryinternetfiles\content…etc etc…why?

It makes it a lot easier to instruct you if we know where it is.
if as you say it sits in temp files then you just need a cleanout of temps and problem solved
rather than give a long and detailed instruction about housekeeping and maintenance , i suggest downloading this program and running it every week or so.
www.ccleaner.com
please post back if you have any problems

If it was in the temporary internet files and you have at times cleared the browser cache, it could be gone.

Also if you have an NT based Operating System (OS), such as win2000 or XP you can schedule a boot time scan from within avast’s menu.

cheers again, for your further advice, however, i am completly pc illiterate. i dont want to download any thing else as my pc is so old it practicly needs winding up to get it going, and memory space is valuable.
i have found all the info that i have on the virus in question, as reported by the other scanner that i had.
i dont know if this will mean anything to you but here are all the details…
c:windows\localsettings\temporaryinternetfiles\content.ies\p3g6h2fp\ied_s7m[7].chm

trojan file js/exploit-GetObject

can i just pick out this file and scan it using avast without having to download anything else?

as i said i am pc illiterate, so please keep advice simple!!!
thankyou xxx

If you have already don a scan and avast didn’t pick this up, then scanning the file won’t do anything different. Please do as we have suggested, clear your browser cache (e.g. delete the temporary internet files).

You still haven’t said what your Operating System is?

If it means cleaning your system or remaining infected, I would download the program. It need only be run once.

I would also suggest that you visit Eddy’s Website click the “HiJackThis Section” and also the “Malware removal instructions and applications” section, and follow the directions there and get back to us if you need more help…

thanks david,
do you mean delete all temp internet files?
i really am pc illiterate, and need step by step instructions…
what do you mean by operating system?
p.s. on the open forum, can it be about anything? or does it have to be about viruses etc? i am having real probs with another program connecting and need advice…

Yes. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, then select Internet Options (see image) and click Delete Files.

Operating System, e.g. win95 or win98, winXP, etc.

In the Off-Topic forum you can discuss any topic, it doesn’t have to be about avast or viruses.

ok, i have deleted files…
my operating system is win98
im gonna put a msg in the other forum now about my other prob, hope you can help with that as you seem to know your stuff!!!
thanks again, x x

Only gained by having made mistakes or experienced the problems before. I have commented on your other post, but unfortunately I haven’t come across this before.
