help please

When I run a boot time scan, I get no viruses found. However , every time I run a quick scan, it says some files could not be scanned. I get the same error message if I run a full scan. Can some one please tell me where I can find the virus? When I try to click repair all and apply, it won’t let me apply. I can repair all, but I cannot apply. Can someone please help me out…my operating system is XP.

Any and all replies would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Mike

Hi calphin,

A little more information about the sort and type of problems you are experiencing would help.

Information needed:

Version of Avast! AIS, Pro, Free? XP Service Pack version.
Name of exact error message. Attach a screenshot of error if possible.
Why are you scanning? Did you get an Avast! alert pop-up regarding a virus or trojan or mal?
Are you using the default settings Avast! came out of the box with? Or have you changed these (some) settings? If so, what settings?

One possibility is having Avast! scan archives it cannot open, thus the error. Other stuff, is information missing, as to why the need to scan is present.

files that can not be scanned are just that…no more no less…it does not mean they are infected
avast is just giving you a scan error report and the reason why…

avast will only take action on infected files…
when avast find infected files it will give them a malware name.

Im running the free version, JAVA:AGENT-AJB [EXPL], I was originally scanning because my computer was extremely slow, and I try to scan it once every couple of weeks. I am using the default settings, I have changed nothing. Sorry, I don’t know how to do the screen shot. I have never had errors like this before, so Im not sure what the problem is.

Thanks
Mike

JAVA:AGENT-AJB [EXPL]
does avast detect this? where does avast say it is located?

I found it in the virus chest. along with a couple others from the last few days. like win32 malware-gen

any other place I should be looking?

well if it is already in chest, then it s not a problem. avast have removed the infection

Clean, Quarantine, or Delete?
http://antivirus.about.com/b/2007/03/11/clean-quarantine-or-delete.htm

So I should be ok then? guess I over reacted when I seen some some files can not be scanned. any thing else you recommend that I download to help speed up or make sure I don’t encounter any more problems?

I greatly appreciate all your time and fast response.

Mike

very good and nice to have extra scanner Malwarebytes

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
website www.malwarebytes.org
forum http://forums.malwarebytes.org/

remember to always click the update button before you start a scan, as they release up to 10 updates a day

I downloaded malwarebytes earlier today along with combofix. should I run a scan daily? or at night before I go to bed? again, thanks very much for the time answering all my questions.

Combofix should only be run under supervision of experts…Feel free to use malwarebytes…Install, update and a scan…remove whatever it finds… ;D

Combofix is a specialist tool and should not be used unless instucted to do so by a qualified malware removalist, please dont use and uninstall combofix, keep Malwarebytes

I guess I shouldn’t have installed combofix? should I uninstall? what are the dangers if you don’t mind my asking…

Yes uninstall it, the dangers are by running it and not knowing what your doing resulting in a system that may be trashed :o

Hi calphin,

The fact that Avast! has quarantined a file named win32 malware-gen could point to an infection, possibly a serious one.

To screenshot a dialog box, window, or text, do the following:

[ol]- Highlight the item you want to capture by clicking anywhere on it.

  • Press ALT+PrintScreen at the same time.
  • Open Paint or something similar (Have XP, Win 7 may be different) and click ‘Edit’. Select "Paste’ from the drop-down list.
  • Captured image should now appear.
  • Give this file a name and save as a .jpeg, .gif, or .png file. Avast! forum will not accept the default setting of bitmap in Paint.[/ol]

To attach this picture file, click Attachments and other options lower left corner below text box now typing in.

ALT+Printscreen is selective in capture. CTRL+Printscreen captures the entire desktop.

As craigb says, some of the tools offered here can cause severe problems if one does not know what they are doing. Uninstall is best option, do not run until told to by a malware expert.

If you wish, you can have a look here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 and attach the three logs from Malwarebytes, OTL, OTL Extras, aswMBR (four) in your next replies. A malware expert will come along and assist you in cleaning your system if necessary.

About 10- 15 minutes ago, I went to the virus chest and deleted every thing that was in there. Is there anything I can do to go back and still do the screen shot? Geez, I feel like a dufus… :o

Thanks,

Mike

Sure, NP.

Try not to panic. One of the things you can do while awaiting help from a malware specialist is to back up all your files you deem important onto a DVD/CD or USB flash drive or USB external drive. Once that is done, you can breathe easier.

It is safe to run the Malwarebytes, OTL, and aswMBR.exe just to obtain the logs. Do not attempt to fix anything, (or else you could turn your system into a doorstop.)

Backup first, then run the three above programs. These logs will tell the expert assisting you what is on your system, where it is, and he will propose what the remedy will be. You may well have to run a program like Combofix, but this will only be done under expert supervision, so even here you will be in good hands.

Do not worry, this forum is rife with users having problems they cannot fix on their own, from IT experts to newbies. All have successful outcomes as long as directions are followed exactly. Make no further changes to your system without expert guidance, as they all know where the potential traps and pitfalls are.

At least you now know how to screenshot.

That is why users come here and ask for expert help.

So, attach the logs requested and help will come your way.

I am in California and it is almost midnight, so I will get a flash drive tomorrow, and then I’ll send the information to you…I appreciate all of your help!! I’ll be back tomorrow after I take the kids to practices and run to Best Buy, etc…

Thank you again,
Mike
