Help Possible Virus Infection Avast not helping

Well i tried downloading the Portable Versions all of them, and (i have Google Chrome) when i click at the bottom of chrome to open up the file, (i click on it) and nothing happens, nothing opens.

The image seems to be a folder with a zipper, a zipped file?

Yes it is a zipped file, do you not have an unzipper ? I use http://peazip.sourceforge.net/

Okay i tried to do Step 3 the SFC but i do not have the Windows CD so i can not continue with step 3. What do i do?

Skip that step and continue with the rest

Hello Essexboy,

I have done what you told me, i had done the Windows Repair and after my computer restarted i noticed i could click on desktop, My Computer, Pictures and Folders. Google Chrome still can not be accessed by clicking on the desktop, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint & Note does not work and any other Applications on my desktop or in my Start Menu does not work. (Except Google Chrome in the Start Menu)…

Have you tried to delete those shortcut icons and create new ones ?

Yes I have tried by Right Clicking, New, Shortcut then choosing something and an error comes up saying “Cannot Create Shortcut”

Also: Whenever i try to open Microsoft Word a popup comes saying “Preparing to Install…” really quick and then disappears and nothing happens.

However you may need to create a new user http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-desktop/cant-create-shortcut-on-desktop/0dfbf2ef-f7a6-493b-97be-ac3d875e07e9

The first link refers to Windows 7 and 8, i have Windows XP, will that be a problem?

Yep for some reason I read you as having 7 :slaphead:

Gould you download this zip file … Extract and double click
Allow it to merge with the registry then retry
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip

Progress! That did a substantial amount ! I can now click Applications on Desktop and items from Start Menu.

Two things though:

 1. Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Note: ERROR Message : “The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in Safe Mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance”

If i press OK it then leads me to this: "The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?

 1. After i click START if i click on SEARCH or HELP AND SUPPORT it either says this: "Windows cannot find ‘helpctr.exe’. Or does nothing at all.

But other than that i can access everything now (all i can see for NOW) and i can even do a SYSTEM RESTORE before this all happened.

But for all that has happened i want to personally thank you Essexboy and the Avast Team for helping problematic computer users with their problems.

Download and run the latest version of windows installer from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=8483

Once done then reboot … Do you get the same error as office tries to install ?

Lets now find out where help centre is and any spares

Run OTL
Copy and paste the following into the custom scans box :

/md5start
helpctr.*
/md5stop

Press Run Scan
Then attach the log

From the Windows Installer Page, Which File should i download? There seems to be 8 files to download. Do i download them all? Or do i download the one that says Windows XP

And the OTL will not operate, midway it says ERROR:

“Access Violation at address CCCC0460. Read of address CCCC0460.”

Download a fresh copy of OTL from here http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/OTL.exe there is a glitch with the latest version from the main site

Select this installer package WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

I downloaded the Installer package and error comes up saying Failed Setup Error or something of that matter and didn’t do nothing.

And i will attach the OTL Log once it is finished.

If the installer gave an error code could you post that

Okay I will post it next, for now here is the new OTL Log.

Thank you.~

OK the file is in the right place so lets reset the registry key

Download the following reg file to your desktop
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/helpctr.reg
Double click the file and allow to merge
Reboot and try help again

And the Windows Installer was successful the second time, i can now open all Microsoft products!

Thank you!
