Help re Adware.Zugo & Win32:MalOb-BX[Cryp] - logs attached

Hello,

I was directed here to seek advice re the removal of Adware.Zugo + flash_player.45199.exe / Win32:MalOb-BX[Cryp]. Yesterday I scanned with Malwarebytes + avast!(both full system scans) because I’d noticed that Windows Security Update KB981852 had apparently updated successfully 10 times but wouldn’t go away. (The info I’ve read re Windows Security Update has been no help).

Pondus & SafeSurf have been kindly helping me & have directed me here where I have followed the instructions re OTL. I’m unsure if here is the right place to post the scan logs, so do forgive me if I’m amiss in doing so. I’d really appreciate any help in interpreting the OTL logs in particular. I’m unsure whether my system is now safe & ‘clean’, or if there’s anything else I could/should do.

Many thanks in advance & happy holidays : )

Essexboy is notified…

check back tomorrow as Essexboy is on UK time and i guess in bed now…

I’m running Eset now. It is 87% complete and has found 5 infected files including Java/Mugademel.A trojan + Win32/Agent.FXHNPDJ trojan. Dammit. As far as I can tell, my system is operating fine - it’s only because of the Windows Security Update being unsuccessful which alerted me to any problems. I think I mentioned previously that the Microsoft site/additional reading about this seems useless; are there any other resources I can utilise…?

20 billion thank yous : )

are there any other resources I can utilise..?
If you have anything in there, Essexboy will see it.........and remove it with his magic stick, like Harry Potter ;D

Just relax and wait for him to arrive

Results of Eset scan log attached.

Oh and I also have Threatfire & WOT… how anything got past all of that I don’t know! I did a Java update recently (due to a prompt) which I think was something nasty masquerading as something innocuous. Will I get kicked off for screaming the ‘c’ word at the top of my lungs…? :-*

Hi there - could you ensure that the only Java you have on your system is update 23 - uninstall any other version

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Once done can you let me know if there are any problems - if there are I will use a removal tool rather than a scanner

Hi Essexboy, thanks for getting back to me

Just wondering if anyone in my time zone can advise me on this please: Java is not in my program list therefore I can’t uninstall it. However, if I click the start button & type in java, under programs, Java 6.0.220.4 comes up, and under files, java jre-windows-i586 (attached to Open Office) comes up in addition to jxpiinstall (this is also depicted with the java icon). I tried using the Revo Uninstaller Hunter Mode which has not been successful. Help! Many thanks.

Have never tried it but there is a program you can try

JavaRA http://en.kioskea.net/faq/1560-remove-older-versions-of-java-with-javara

Thanks Pondus, I think it worked. The other javas I mentioned are still there when I search in the start menu but the program you recommended said they’d been uninstalled & I now have version 6.23.

Log attached as requested. Many thanks : )

What are your current problems ?

Please download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware from Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

[*]Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
[*]If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
[*]Once the program has loaded, select “Perform Quick Scan”, then click Scan.
[*]The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
[*]Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
[]When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
[
]The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
[*]Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Hi Essexboy,

Thanks for getting back to me. My first post has MBAM logs attached, should I update the version I have & do a full scan? Also, avast! + Eset both found nasties that MBAM did not… the initial bug found by MBAM is still quarantined.

Thanks again for your time & consideration

Aye update and re-run please - just to confirm there are no orphans left

Hello again,

Here is the MBAM log as requested. Should I leave Adware.Zugo in quarantine? And as per the subject of this correspondence, flash_player.45199.exe / Win32:MalOb-BX[Cryp] is in the avast! virus chest, should I leave that where it is also?

Many thanks & big grins all round for your time & consideration : )

Aye leave it in the chest for a week or so and then kill it ;D

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands [resethosts] [purity] [emptytemp] [EMPTYFLASH] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

[*]Go to Control Panel and select System and Maintenance
[*]Select System
[*]On the left select Advance System Settings and accept the warning if you get one
[*]Select System Protection Tab
[*]Select Create at the bottom
[*]Type in a name i.e. Clean
[*]Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones

[*]Go back to the System and Maintenance page
[*]Select Performance Information and Tools
[*]On the left select Open Disk Cleanup
[*]Select Files from all users and accept the warning if you get one
[*]In the drop down box select your main drive i.e. C
[*]For a few moments the system will make some calculations
[*]Select the More Options tab
[*]In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
[*]Select Delete on the pop up
[]Select OK
[
]Select Delete

Final stretch

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter
For the first run I would recommend a boot defrag and disck check

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programme:

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7729/mbamicontw5.gif
Malwarebytes. Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
[*]Microsoft Windows Update
