I just downloaded a file, opened it and chaos
It said it was shutting down the system, I tried opening my AV but couldn’t - It wasn’t in the process list so I couldn’t stop it

I’m scanning but it will be pointless if it wasn’t detected? and it says it will finish in 10 days

Sounds like a blaster like infection, or shutdown.exe flagged as a FP. Try to disable system restore.
And do a full scan with stinger.exe, download from here: http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger1001602.exe

Stinger is a very limited scanner.
I suggest a full computer on-line scanning:
Kaspersky (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32
Trendmicro housecall
F-Secure
BitDefender (free removal of the malware)
