I recently bought a new 120 GB hard drive and went to switch it out to make it my main drive. I copied my main drive partition onto the new drive and then switched the drive letters so it would boot. Prior to the copy, I disabled all of of the resident protection. Maybe that did something?
Anyway, when I booted it, it came up with a pop-up telling me to buy the software. I hit “Close” on the pop-up and the program gave me the screen for entering my registration key.
I’m wondering if you could tell me why it made me re-register the software, even though the entire partition was copied exactly?
How did you copy the partition?
Switching the drive letters was not a good idea.
You should have changed the jumpers on the drive to make the new one the primary drive.
If you need a new key:
If you have the Home version of Avast you can simply get a new key from the website.
If you have the Pro version, you must contact your reseller or Alwil.
Yeah, I know wasn’t a good idea, now. Many things on the system are screwing up, so I’ll just reformat. I didn’t even think of swiching the jumpers at the time. I just used Partion Magic to make it my primary drive and then copied it with Partition Magic.
Look at it from the bright side.
1] You have learned something.
2] You will have a nice clean system when you are done.
Just some tips:
After installing a OS, always install the motherboard drivers first.
Don’t forget to install av and firewall before going online
Don’t forget to get all security patches/updates as first download when you go online.
The thing that you overlooked here is the registry.
Many applications store certain paths/drive letters there.
By not making the new drive the primary one after the image copying, you could say the registry was messed up.
